Clarkson: Well, we got ourselves here. We're sorted and ready to go. R. Hammond: Now, the national team's first match is against Saint Mark. They're known here for being the complete antithesis of Hertfordshire-Jammbo. Whereas they are the monocle-adjusting fancy-pants of Esferos, we are the slightly frozen over Village People. J. May: They'll probably be eating truffles about now. J. Clarkson: Δ65, they'll cost, for something that looks like a mummified testicle. Right, you two ready? R. Hammond: Have we really got our own plane? J. May: Yep. R. Hammond: Fantastic! Let's go. Onwards to Ryxtylopia. [The trio depart to the place where their plane is waiting.] J. Clarkson: I'd better not have to deal with airport check-in again today. R. Hammond: You see, this time because we're using a private plane, there's no check-in, no queuing, no waiting around. So this time, we are gonna leave early and we're gonna leave well. J. Clarkson: So we are 181 Squadron. R. Hammond: No Jeremy, that's Polaris. J. May: We're 383 Squadron. J. Clarkson: Ah. R. Hammond: Forward to victory! J. May: The Genesis are 11th in the rankings and are in a group with the current number one ranked team. Don't get carried away. R. Hammond: Come on, have a little faith. [The three make it to the field where their plane lies in wait... Clarkson rushes off to the lavatory.] R. Hammond: Go. J. Clarkson: Going. J. May: Ah ha, now we get down to business. The 0H-8J Combine Tractor that May has brought to take himself and his two colleagues to Ryxtylopia for the 3rd Football World Cup. If you may remember, the previous one was hosted right at home in Hertfordshire-Jammbo. Not sure how we landed that. R. Hammond: Hang on a second! Is that it? J. May: Well, it's a 0H-8J Combine Tractor. R. Hammond: James, it's pathetic! It looks like something a farmer would leave behind. J. May: Honestly, it's a good kite, this. R. Hammond: ...Kite?! [Clarkson comes back from the lavatory and sees the old military plane.] J. Clarkson: Hello. R. Hammond: He's trying to make us go in the sky in something you'd see poking out of a skip. J. Clarkson: What is it? What's it called? R. Hammond: 0H-8J Combine Tractor, whatever that is, it used to be an old crop duster I suspect. J. Clarkson: This is a military aircraft apparently. R. Hammond: And that's only the start. J. Clarkson: It's basically a toaster with wings nailed to the sides. R. Hammond: James, what are you actually doing now? J. Clarkson: What's happening? J. May: Well, you have to do pre-flight checks. Make sure stuff's all working properly. If you're really interested, I'm going to turn on the battery master switch along with checking the landing lights, stall warning vein, the heat and the flap operation- R. Hammond: They're likely to have broken, since it was parked? J. May: Well you don't know. R. Hammond: What, like the plane picked itself up and nibbled away at all the wires or something... J. Clarkson: If you look closely Richard you can see that James is really enjoying this. R. Hammond: If you also look closely you can see that I'm not. J. Clarkson: That makes two of us. R. Hammond: How long do these checks take? J. May: 20 minutes, half an hour. R. Hammond: ...Not today, mate. You've got... y- there must be a way of doing this more quickly. J. May: Why don't you shut up and do what airplane passengers do which is sit in the terminal, have a cup of tea, complain how expensive it is... R. Hammond: I swear, he enjoys the checks more than the flying. [May refills one of the oil compartments.] J. May: Nice. Very nice. J. Clarkson: If I tell you that The Genesis are already in sight of Ryxtylopia? R. Hammond: God, we- we really have to get a move on. James! James! I just noticed the wings have come off. Oh no, no they're still on. You can tick those, they're alright. Yep, that's on. J. May: Is it? R. Hammond: These are on, look. J. May: Tires, are they all up? R. Hammond: Yes! Go. J. Clarkson: James is still engaged in his pre-flight festival of analness? R. Hammond: Think of it this way. One of us has lost the will to live. Guess which one. [Clarkson can't help but laugh.] J. May: Because it's been standing overnight, you have to make sure there's no sediment or water in the fuel which could cause- R. Hammond: Is there any sediment or water in the fuel?! J. May: Well you have to check it like this, look I'll show you. These are drain points, you use this special cup. R. Hammond: Good, good. Oh look, it's clear. J. May: You take a sample out and you make sure there's no water in it which you would see as a separate layer. See? Clear. R. Hammond: Good. Go! In the sky. J. May: Well there are five of these on each side and two under the engine. [A time frame within 17 years later...] J. May: Got your seatbelts on? R. Hammond: Is this more checks? J. May: No, seatbelt. Clarkson: You loved the checks more. R. Hammond: James. We don't seem to be going very fast. J. May: Well we're doing 80 knots indicated air speed. R. Hammond: 80 knots is about 85, 90 miles/hour? J. May: Yeah, it's not quite that simple 'cause we're now at a pressure altitude of nearly 7,000 feet so you have to consider the true air speed. Indicated air speed is what you fly on, that's the rate at which the air is hitting the airplane. But because it's thinner up here, we're actually going through the air faster than the indicated air speed. J. Clarkson: The pre-flight checks have taken so long that by the time we're leaving Hertfordshire-Jammbo, The Mafia are leaving the sky itself. This is the parent company of Slow Air, one of the two largest airline providers in Hertfordshire-Jammbo. The other is named Air Anglia. James really likes the lounges that Slow offers. They're doing the lounges for H&J's national team too. The star-studded team of the Andolian juggernaut, Larxia, ranked 4th in the World of Football, has had quite the history with the trophy. They came so close to winning it all in the 1st World Cup, but narrowly missed out on the greatest honour in the world of football, denied by Nieubasria. The 2nd time-around, Larxia once again made it to the quarterfinals. Another heartbreaking moment for Larxia in the history of Football World Cup. This time the players look prepared to get it all for our nation, they have gone there as a unit stronger than ever before. The bonding and brotherhood of the team has been higher than ever before. The players have quite literally fought for each other, with every team-mate rallying behind the most influential and inspirational captain in the history of Larxian football. He has been one of the greatest ambassadors of Larxian football across Esferos. There was a slight concern regarding the World Cup being hosted by Ryxtylopia, due to the nation's history of the oppression of the poor. Several influential figures cited the mistreatment of citizens as a Human Rights issue. This had the football fans in Larxia divided. Some believed that the Larxian nation must uphold the standards of Human Rights and boycott the tournament being held in the Auran nation, while others believed that this was an internal issue of Ryxtylopia, that must not be interfered with. To clear any speculations of Larxia participating in the tournament, the FFL President, Mr. Nahuel Garcia, made a clear statement that the FFL will be sending a delegation to Ryxtylopia for the upcoming Football World Cup. As he turned the lights on, the faint whirring of a lightbulb echoed throughout the room. How long had he slept since he got back to the hotel room? Mussa quickly looked left and right, as if the walls could answer his question. The last days of training had been very demanding, and the long flight had not been kind to him, as he still had to recover fully. He slowly got out of his bed and looked out of the window. Ryxenia’s bright city lights cut through the dark sky, as if they were a sea of artificial stars. Mussa had never traveled so far away in his life. He was used to living in his native town, small even by fluvian standards. Instead, the Ryxtylopian Capital seemed to stretch endlessly, and he struggled to visualize the sheer size of it. “A single city that contains almost all citizens of Rivalfiume,” he thought to himself. But Mussa’s thoughts were cut short by a faint siren noise, as several police lights briefly lit up the distant city streets, painting them bright blue. Mussa followed the police lights with his eyes, until they disappeared behind a large building. It seemed like a lot of police was required. He didn't think too much of it. "Besides, it's such a huge city..." Mussa admired the city landscape one more time before turning to his bed. “Sleeping will help me recover and stay sharp for the oncoming matches.” he thought, before shutting off the lights. Federation of Inner Ryxtylopia Posted November 17, 2023 Share Posted November 17, 2023 The Big Day - Fire n’ Fireworks As police cars stood outside and the checkpoints near the Rivalda calmed down from the wave of laser pointers collected, the ceremony finally began at 12:00, with important figures taking place at one of the boxes in the center part of one of the sides of the stadium. The president of the FRF: Hildo Gailavéz stepped up to give a brief speech to a crowd, both Ryxtylopians foreigners and the press. “I welcome everybody to Ryxtylopia, were me and the FRF, in cooperation with the government are proud to announce that after our bid for the III World Cup of Football was accepted we’re happy to receive you all here.” Gailavéz slightly adjusts his tie. “Its of the greatest honors for me the FRF and Ryxtylopia to host this tournament, and the intense work and investments have paid off, we are confident of our nation’s ability to host this tournament and i as well as all the people here hope that this tournament will be remembered as one of the best in the edition for decades to come.” Gailavéz steps down as the crowd start applauding, in time for the president Edyuardo, to step up; a complicated man for sure, wanting to protect the average ryxtylopian whilst selling out the country’s labor, helping big business and allowing foreigners to set up a military presence in Ryxtylopia. Edyuardo started his brief speech to oficially mark the start of the tournament, before the first match between Ryxtylopia and Kalmach would happen in a few hours. The crowd applauds him. “Thank you, thank you, like my fellow compatriot said i'm very proud that my country will get to host this tournament.” Edyuardo pauses for a moment as he read the speech, just as the cameras focused on him to see a green dot, on his face, a laser had gotten through, however this laser was only able to stay focused on his face for less than half a minute as security forces off camera quickly apprehended to perpetrator and took them away. “And now with this, im proud to announce, this 17th of November, of the year 1423 the World Cup of Football in Ryxtylopia, to mark the third edition of the tournament has now officially started!” The crowd applauds and cheers, as bags of balloons are released; the president stays in place as a speaker announces: “Now with accord with the law, we will honor the president of the nation, and all ryxtylopian citizens by playing the national anthem of the Ryxtylopian Federation, followed by the cultural tournament.” The Ryxtylopian national anthem starts playing, most stood respectfully but a group in the crowd whistled and booed during the ordeal, while it wasn’t too loud, it was audible making it sort of an akward moment, for the duration of the anthem. But soon after the anthem stopped, music started playing as the cultural exposition started, with traditional ryxtylopian music playing as dancers went to the pitch to give a brief cultural exposition. This lasted about an hour before it ended, the president gave one final remark: “And I give a cordial welcome to all the foreigners that have decided to travel here to watch the tournament. The 33-player strong team will be playing in Group B for the group stage, together with Cambria, United Adaikes, and Teralyon from Polaris, the latter of which the Giovannilandians will meet on the first matchday, as well as the Nuran nations of Sekiya and Peourouin. The national team has seen many changes since the last edition of the World Cup, most notably Gustavo Zapata replacing Lorentio Santo-Ferrari as team captain. Gustavo scored goals for Giovanniland in the two previous World Cup, and also led the nation's football in the past Summer Esferiads, being the leader in goals and assistances while being a key contributor to Giovanniland's two silver medals in Saint-Josalyn and then Quorivo-Kharventhin. Federation of Inner Ryxtylopia Posted November 18, 2023 Share Posted November 18, 2023 The end of day 1 People packed into the Rivalda, practically filling up to capacity for the game between Ryxtylopia and Kalmach, “the colossus” preparing to see Ryxtylopia’s first match at home. As per usual with matches involving Ryxtylopia, fans of both teams weren’t allowed to sit in the same areas, the stadium was subdivided, and most of these subdivisions went to Ryxtylopia considering they would have most of the guests, with removable metal fences separating both sides and each subdivision to prevent fights from breaking out. After both national anthems played, the locals kicked off, starting off slightly cautiously, but after a gap opened up in the opponent's defense the ryxtylopian players took to attacking, with a pass from M. Larista reaching A. Fydó who was able to send the ball cleanly into the right side of Kalmach’s goal in the 2nd minute, as the Rivalda exploded with the word “GOOOOOOOOOL!” That meant Ryxtylopia was 1 up in the 2nd minute, expectations were high however from here as the kalmachians kicked off the game lost momentum, and it became both sides constantly fighting for the ball, with the ryxtylopians attempting to get the kalmachians to make a mistake to be able to attack, while their opponents put pressure on the midfield without being able to get into the backline. In the 37th minute, Fydó got a pass from R. Dipartí taking the ball all the way into the box, where he attempted to shoot but the ball went over the post. Just before break in the 44th minute, Fydó took the ball and tried finding someone to head it in, he passed it to Larista in the box, but Larista missed the header, the ball heading for M. Vilaní who was unprepared for the ball, expecting a bounce; Vilaní shot with his weak foot, sending the ball on a low angle to be easily catched by Kalmach’s GK, Meikal Schkridt. After 2 minutes of added time, the whistle blew signaling half time as both sides headed to rest, and fans headed for more snacks and replenishments. For the second time it mostly remained the same, however after some changes Kalmach was able to get back on the game, as ryxtylopia made fewer attempts on goal, the last one being a long shot N. Farris on the 54th minute that got easily intercepted by Schkridt. On the 67th minute however after several attempts to get through the midfield Kalmach was able to exploit a missed pass by P. Arvaléz and get through into the backline, where E. Rivas failed a slide tackle and E. Vilaña was too slow to respond, as the ball went and bounced off the post into the net on top of Franco Arvaldí’s Head, at the 67th minute. After that the stadium felt silent as the ball once again kicked off, Kalmach immediately going on the attack and getting past the strong Ryxtylopian midfield, however this time around the 70th minute Vilaña intercepted a ball headed for the box and cleared it away. Ryxtylopia had their last chance of the game around the 81rst minute when Vilaní received a good pass from Farris and passed it to Fydó who had his ball blocked by one of the kalmash defenders. Kalmach continued with the pressure until their last chance in the 90+1rst minute during the 3 minutes of stoppage time, when they received a corner kick, but shot to the net but defender E. Guivéz deflected the ball towards the midfield, where the match ended 1-1. Fans left the stadium, the game was sort of intense but many were disappointed by not winning their first game at home, the game exposed however how loud “The Band” was, with the whole Rivalda singing almost in unisense with several songs, as fans stayed right up until the end of the match. From the best known song; Adilentí Ryxtylopia! to Biutre Ródeado, and insults at the federal police, flags and banners everywhere and the fireworks and singing at the start, the match probably had the best atmosphere during that day. But the players didn’t celebrate, as they got ready to train the next day, as their next match would be against a team that beat them 4-1 in the previous competition, almost condemning the last team to fall in the groups, and previous finalists: Larxia. I spend some time at Highland this year and really liked what I saw from her and from that whole program. We’ve got some great younger players coming out of these smaller clubs that can only go up from here. Ian: Yeah, and I’m torn on that, frankly. These younger players try to be flashy, they try to be heroes, and seeing Lukas go off last year only inflated their egos. As we know, yesterday was the first day of the Esferos world cup, and us of Tiveronia 'i Zuja have all the news about our national team's performance! Sadly, the first match was a loss, being a 1-0 for Fujai's team. Our players aren't demoralized from the results, as it was their first ever match against another national team, and one that reached the top 5 last year! Federation of Inner Ryxtylopia Posted November 18, 2023 Share Posted November 18, 2023 The Dark After the first few days since the tournament started, the protests that had marked the day before the start and the ones that happened on the first day had calmed down, as since the tournament had already started there wasn’t much point in protesting especially considering the police response was a bit harsh (by ryxtylopian standards). No domestic media outlet had reported on the protests yet, only passing it off as “minor unrest in Ryxenia” and this unrest had only spread to a few other cities, were riots hadn’t happened. However it wasn’t all sunshine and roses, many media outlets had been speculated of taking bribes not to report on the situation, or in some cases, been intimidated to not report on the situation by the police and internal security apparatus, the police in Ryxtylopia is widley hated, and so any story about it usually reaches front pages in local news, due to this the government had acted preemptively to stop any stories from going through, at least domestically. On the international stage it was a different story however, many foreigners had taken notice of the unrest with some even wandering off into it, which was not good in terms of the image of the nation, due to this the police often did their best, or rather worst when it came to intimidating foreign press to not go into the slums and report about the unrest, at least while containment efforts were still ongoing. 4 Well-known reporters in Ryxtylopia had gone missing in the week during and leading up to the tournament: Taxia Divas Isadro Guivarra Arturo Dipartí Rascanda Ivarradí As well as this around another 50 to a possible 89 lower profile reporters had gone missing, as well as protest leaders, known agitators, union leaders and even low-profile political figures, and innocent people, it wasn't the people going missing that was the problem, it was their profiles, activities they had been involved in, political or social influence and something most of them shared in common was dissaproval of the tournament. Reporters going missing in Ryxtylopia was nothing new, however 4 of the most well known critics of the government going missing in a short period, people with pretty big influence in the opposition media, that wasn’t a very good sign, and it was just a matter of time before more people took notice of the matter, but with still so many days to go before the tournament ended, the police presence remained the same, and detentions went up by approximatley 50-75% in some areas. However the tournament had to go on, and efforts to prevent foreign media reporting on the unrest had been sorta successful, as no *MAJOR* stories about the civil rights abuses had made it into the global headlines yet, which was a good thing for an authoritarian, oligarchic country trying to portray itself as a functional democracy on the global stage. Later on in the show we'll be discussing the negative mental and physical effects of consuming foreign media, especially "anime" from places like Zoran, but first... The subject line, stark and intrusive, cut through the usual casual treatment of emails: "A Proposition You Can't Ignore." Opening the email, the message was succinct yet laced with a threat that struck at the core of Jacen's meticulously constructed web of relationships - professional and private. In his time at GEA he was courting some of the wealthiest businesspeople and highest class of nobility in Basria and the Astorian Realms. He is now renown for his discretion and penchant for keeping his client's name out of the papers. The email begins, Mr. Goode, In the realm of privilege you navigate, there exist shadows. Secrets, Mr. Goode, that could tarnish the pristine reputation you've so carefully built for your Lords and Ladies. Consider this a proposition—one you can't afford to ignore. The email continued with a narrative that raised Jacen's hackles - a hint at evidence, subtle yet foreboding, regarding some of his clients. The veiled threat left Jacen uneasy, a sensation he rarely entertained in his world. As he absorbed the implications, the message transitioned from the hints to a more tangible demand. The proposition pivoted around a legal challenge, a battle that would thrust Jacen into the heart of a conflict between the state and the very importance of privacy - an assertion of freedom against the prying eyes of the government. The writer claimed Jacen's assistance in a case involving a prominent biotech company. The allegation was startling - government interference in encrypted communications, industrial espionage, and the alleged theft of trade secrets pertaining to a revolutionary diabetes medication. The twist lay in the revelation that the government entity responsible for acquiring the decrypted information was none other than CTGM. A government corporation that Jacen knew was well connected to Basric business and politics, but was part of a subtly separate private alignment of nobles and their own lawyers like himself. Not an easy target. The room now echoed with the weight of a choice that transcended the boundaries of legality. Jacen found himself standing at a crossroads—a choice between loyalty to his clientele, whose deeds would cause greater scandal and damage than this case, and the inevitable damage caused by pitting the elite echelons against each other. "Luke might be popular with his friends outside the United Adaikes, but he only talks about proposed policies. Nothing comes to light, even in the House of Representatives. It all ends up in Committee Hearings, but nothing more productive! "Now, check this: Foreign Affairs Secretary Anne Duncan called a quick press conference. Assistant Secretary for Polaris Affairs Garnet Sinclair and Assistant Secretary for Auran Affairs Nidia Bourke were also at the table with Secretary Duncan at that press conference. The topic? Calling out the Ryxtylopian government on the missing journalists since World Football announced that Ryxtylopa will host the 3rd World Cup of Football. "The People's Democratic Party, the leading party in the House right now, as well as the President's party, are all of the same crazy kind. In the last session of the House, senior member Higinio Parsons, the representative of North Shil City, called the country's representatives to vote for a bill providing international aid to Ryxtylopia, with the Auran country's "slums" being highlighted by one international news channel. Mr. Parsons, with all due respect, can't we find a way for our people first to get out of our very comprehensive social programs, where I think they're the only reasons our finances are bleeding? Focus first on the "poor" ones in this country and help them look for jobs so that they won't be very dependent on our country's social programs. Almost everything is free in our country, yet we pay them because they are poor? "And take the extravagance from our international players! They're still the same Adaikesians in our country! They're already earning big in this country, yet we still provide them the bigger bucks just to feel important in other countries. We got some footage that our international football players are heavily guarded with guards in Ryxtylopia, from disembarking from their plane to their hotel and practices. Now, if the country's paying for those security personnel, I'll be sad for this country. Not counting the fact that they're staying in Hoteil Ila de Oro, one of the most luxurious hotels in the country, despite being "poor."
