History of Rivalfiume | Istoria Fluviana
History is currently under review. Reworking some stuff!
"Rivalfiume", as mentioned in the overview, means "by the river". That's because the first civilizations that inhabited the Fluvian lands settled down along the many rivers that cross the country. There is evidence that nomadic peoples with a hunter-gatherer lifestyle lived within the borders of modern-day Rivalfiume, but the first records of stable human settlements are found on the country's coast, and date back to 2000-1900 BF. This date is often used to mark the start of the Fluvian Ancient Period (Fluvian: Lasso Antigo).
The Fluvian Ancient Period: The First Civilizations and City-States
The Fluvian Ancient Period is a long and mostly peaceful period of time, when city-states started to consolidate along the coast.
These city-states were very different from the usual village: Compared to them, they were not only larger, but also organized differently.
They were built near a river/near the sea and surrounded by solid walls and man-made creeks. Canals were created from the rivers, from which smaller and smaller secondary canals branched off, which carried water towards the inlands. Two prominent buildings could be seen outside of the walls: the “Palace”, a large house that was surrounded by a courtyard, and the “Temple”. These two buildings were the symbolic places of power and worship, and the heart of the city-states. Several “districts” were built around the city center, connected by various streets or pathways.
The inhabitants of these large, bustling cities were very diverse:
Craftsmen - who produced the various goods that the city exported, such as textiles, pottery, weapons and jewelry;
Soldiers - who defended the city and protected its inhabitants from enemy invasions;
Magistrates - who registered the quantity of goods produced and kept inside the city’s storehouses;
Priests - who called upon the Ancient Gods, so that water kept flowing regularly and crops thrived;
Farmers - who provided food for themselves and all of the city.
Everything was coordinated by a Khu, who was the city monarch. The Khu established the criteria for the collection and redistribution of food, eventual changes to the city-state, when and who to declare war, with which peoples and cities to trade.
The first notable city-states were the Khunate of Khamadj, the Khunate of Gaba and the Khunate of Vedh. These city-states were all independent, but practiced trading and other interactions. Eventually, the Khu’s powers extended further the city-state’s walls, often encompassing hundreds of villages and smaller cities along the coast. 
The Khunate of Khamadj
The Khunate of Khamadj was the northernmost Khunate. By ~1500 BF, it administered a territory that included around 80 villages and about 100’000 Inhabitants. Khamadj was an agricultural and commercial city-state: the climate permitted the production of cotton, grapes and many fruit trees, and the low-lying plains permitted the Khamadji to have sheep and cattle as livestock.(thus selling wool and leather). Further inland, following the course of the river, the Khamadji had access to wood, thanks to a nearby forest. Thanks to its strategic position, the city-state of Khamadj soon became an economic powerhouse, connecting the Fluvian Plains to outside trade, later defined as “one of the crossroads of Ancient Nur”.
Khamadj’s wealth was well-known and desired by many despots, kings and khus of the region. During its history, Khamadj was often subject to raids and invasions from outsiders, who seeked to plunder the prosperous northern cities.
The Khunate of Gaba [WIP]
The Khunate of Gaba was positioned between the Khunate of Khamadj and the Khunate of Vedh. Maritime trade was the backbone of Gabaean economy: The biggest city sat on the mouth of river Ǧesi, one of the main routes that connected the Ancient Fluvian Civilizations to the outside world. The Gabaean city-state was governed with extreme efficiency, as documented by some ceramic tablets of the era. Gaba was also well-known for its agriculture: prized lemons, herbs and spices were grown all around the city-state.
The Khunate of Vedh [WIP]
The Khunate of Vedh was the southernmost Khunate and probably the latest to be established by ancient settlers. The Khunate was organized differently from the others: The urban centers had no outer walls and seemed to be built with a precise urban plan in mind - with long and wide paved roads.
The origin of the Ancient Fluvian Civilizations
Most historians agree that the ancient fluvian civilizations descended from a common ancestor. This thesis is further reinforced by the fact that these civilizations spoke similar languages and shared customs. The three ancient city-states spoke a common trading language later dubbed Gavekh (Gaban-Vedhian-Khamadji) which has been studied by linguists throughout history, believed to have influenced Modern Fluvian in one way or another.
The role of Writing and Religion
The Khus were considered the High Priests, the “Divine Coordinators”, as documented by ancient stelae: They could communicate with the Deities, and made sacrifices in their honor.
They were believed to hold supernatural powers and to be “demi-gods” among humans. The Ancient Fluvian Civilizations asked themselves why there were years of good harvest or years of bad ones, why it sometimes rained, or why it was hot/cold outside, and so theorized the existence of supernatural beings, Deities, that controlled the weather, the seasons and nature.
The presence of stelae proves that the ancient Fluvian civilizations had their own writing system, which has been thoroughly analyzed by historians. The earliest records found are from 1590 BF: a ceramic tablet from Akharran (a small village, probably under the sphere of influence of Gaba), detailing livestock counts.

As the City-States became bigger and more populated, tensions started to rise: the land area wasn't a lot, since cities tended to be near the coast, and so the City-States started to fight for the hegemony of the Fluvian Plains: This marked the end of the Early Ancient Period, which lasted around 500 years of mostly peace and prosperity.

The Federal Republic of Noton Mast
BASIC OVERVIEW
Noton Mast, officially the Federal Republic of Noton Mast, is a small country covering 607,194 km2  of land in northeastern Nur. It borders Apexiala to the east and Fauthur to the south. It is a federal country, with about 11.7 million people living in its 6 provinces and territories. Its capital is at Port Kingsley.
Noton Mast was formed in the 1000s, starting with a personal union between the then-independent states of Choira and Calpesia. Crupsea and the Rhett Territory both joined in the 1010s. Ossory was annexed into Noton Mast as the Ossorian District in 1022.
It was then colonized by the United Nations of Kalmach from 1122 to 1355.
Growing discontent with the subsequent governments led to Joseph Calambari and his National Unity Party taking control in May 1369. Calambari's tenure as Prime Minister would see widespread human rights abuses, government corruption, and crackdown on dissent.
He would lead for 18 years from 1369 to 1387, when riots took place across the country over a flight forced to land in Calpesia, leading to the violent overthrow of his government. Bridgit Bouchard, an opposition MP, would then become Prime Minister, first in an interim position and then after 1387's federal elections.
 
PROVINCES AND TERRITORIES OVERVIEW

 
As previously mentioned, Noton Mast is made up of six provinces and territories: the provinces of Choira, Crupsea, Ossory, Calpesia, and the territories of the Rhett Territory and the Federal District.
All provinces and territories have the same powers accorded to them; the Territory of Rhett retained its name upon its accession to the Republic.
The most populous province is Choira (CH), with 4,938,015 people living in the province. Major cities in the province include its capital Caithness, Helmfeld (20 km west of Caithness), and Cumamara (on the border with the Federal District).
 
POLITICS OVERVIEW
As of writing, the current prime minister is Magdalene Borsch of the Civil Alliance, and the Chancellor General is Valter Bouchere.
The Prime Minister is the head of government. They are responsible for the day-to-day running of the country, holding executive power.
An election is usually held in the first half of May. To start the elections process, the Prime Minister must request the Chancellor General to allow their resignation as Prime Minister, dissolve their government, and hold elections, of which the Chancellor General can theoretically either deny or accept the request; however, there has never been a record of a Chancellor General denying a request.
After an election, the Chancellor General nominates a candidate for Prime Minister (usually the leader of the party which came first in the election), which is then submitted to the Parliament for a vote. If the vote passes, the Prime Minister is elected and can then begin the process of forming their government, appointing MPs to the various ministries.

LAW AND JUSTICE OVERVIEW
The court system is managed by the federal Ministry for Justice through the Department of Courts and Jails. Provincial and territorial courts are under the purview of that province's Ministry of Justice or its equivalent. All court cases in Noton Mast are decided by a jury.
The lowest level of federal court is the Federal District Courts, of which there are three; the Southern District Court (covering Calpesia and Choira), Ossorian Federal District (covering Ossory), and the Northern Federal District (covering the Rhett Territory and Crupsea). 
The Federal Appellate Court in Smoland is the second level, overseeing cases appealed from the Federal District Courts.

New Legislation From The NCC
License Plates Now Unitary?
 
West Fauthur - January 7th, 1423
For several months now, diplomats from across all of Nur were travelling abroad to West Fauthur to be apart and discuss in the NCC (Nuran Cooperation Commission) on how the nations of Nur can achieve, that our continent can be more unified and made less reliant upon other continents such as Polaris for example.
In those several months, diplomats and delegates from all of Nur came to West Fauthur. Indluding but not limited to diplomats of; 
-The Republic of Sekiya
-The Directorial Republic of Rivalfiume
-The Infinite Empire of Aukera
-The United Nations of Kalmach
-The United Republics of Fauthur
Lastly, many proposals have been submitted, such as freedom of movement or a unified space program. One proposal though stood out from the others as the NCC came to an agreement on it. License Plate Standardization. Now, to this agreement there have also been brought forth many designs from all across Nur. The NCC came to an official agreement on one plate, which was chosen from all partaking nations to adopt and use from the start of July 1423. For this, the question of foreign travel came up and all agreed that after a period of 5 years, a red-tagged license plate in the design of the agreed upon shall be adopted.
 
Now, why should Nur adopt a unified proposal for license plates?
A representative of the NCC gave us an answer;
"For one, it is good for identification purposes. A unitary license plate across Nur can be safely identified without searching through tedious paperwork and trying to understand all the different plates. It is also made easier to let cars pass inspection on border checkpoints due to an easier understanding of said plates. It is also good for use for international recognition. For travellers to Nur, it may seem irritating having different license plates across every country and having to learn each one when they are having a vacation in that country. That's why having a unitary system helps. Now Foreigners, Immigrants, Natives and so on can read the Nuran license plates in a heartbeat. It is lastly a lot safer to have a unitary plate as it eliminates cross country smuggling operations by ground....."
 
The proposed plate is supposed to look like this and will be mandatory in newly built cars from July 1423 onwards:
Be wary that the usage of these plates from any member nations are not mandatory and a member nation may choose to keep their current plate, effectively skipping this proposal. It will also be free to use for non-member nations.

The first variant shall be for cars and trucks and the second one for motorbikes and smaller vehicles. 
It is urged that when time comes, the citizens of Fauthur immediately make use of the license plate for as a penalty fee up to 200PT may be issued. Upon further usage after being already warned, you may be at risk of gaining a penalty point to your license or your license may be taken away for up to 6 months.
 
The Fauthurian Head of State of Head of Government have also discussed a permit to use the old license plate if one desires to use it. Although, even with the permit, you are urged to acquire a new standard license plate for the identificaion purposes and have it somehwere ready in your car.

Kerglom Hafth Denounces Aftokratoria being a part of Nur
 
West Fauthur - February 16th, 1423
 
BREAKING NEWS AT THE WEST WEST FAUTHUR HALLS
At a public speech this afternoon, Head of Government, Kerglom Hafth got into a heated discussion with an audience member at his monthly public speech in the West West Fauthur Halls, where he loudly exclaimed that: "Aftokratoria will not be recognised as a part of the Nuran continent, and never will. It is simply situated too far north of that it would ever be recognised as a Nuran state, and should therefore not particiapte in our politics." This was not well received by the audience, aswell as fellow politicians as this part of the speech was uploaded to social media in just a couple of minutes, sparking a "shitstorm" on the web with several people not being satisfied of Hafth's actions. Furthermore, Hafth openly defended his words, not trying to diffuse the situation. This is seen as a international statement to Aftokratoria which could cause massive backlash upon the government or even the country. A lot of effort is being made as to cover up this incident but it is already too widespread to do anything about it. Hafth already has several scandals behind his back even before the candidacy for Head of Government. For example, Hafth has once been caught spreading lies about the then current government which was not successful. The other time he tried to rig elections in favor of a center right politician who was promptly discharged from his position as a politician and permanently disbarred from participating in any political actions. It is, as honest as we say it, a small wonder Hafth even got to where he is today, stating that he's bettered himself from back in the day, which, as we see today, is not true as he is starting to reveal his true nature once again. 
 
There has not been an official response from the government of Fauthur, nor the government of Aftokratoria on this incident yet. And it doesn't seem as though Hafth will receive any consequences yet, but future will see. The public of course hopes that the Aftokratorian government does indeed not take this seriously but as Hafth said it, this matter may be more pressing and serious than we think, as it is in fact an official statement made by him , the Head of Government.

Sekiya's entry into the NCC license plate standardization scheme.
Following months of discussion, the NCC has decided on a license plate standardization scheme that will streamline travel and licensing between member nations.

Location: Sekiya In line with recent legislation from the Nuran Cooperation Commission, the Bureau of Vehicle Licensing has released the new design for Sekiyan license plates.

The new plates are available from the Bureau for Vehicle Licensing, Standards & Safety, however there will be initial delays whilst production methods are updated. All new cars produced and sold within Sekiya from July 1423 onwards will have the updated plates. Sekiyans will have until 1433 to move to the new plates.
Citizens will be able to either purchase a new plate directly for 20$, or will be given the option to trade in their old plate and receive a new plate for a significantly reduced fee of 7$.

The Directorial Republic of Rivalfiume (Fluvian: Repùbblika Direttoriale Fluvjana), also known colloquially as the Republic of Rivalfiume, the Fluvian Republic (Fluvian: Repùbblika Fluvjana) or simply Rivalfiume (Fluvian: Rivalfjume, pronounced ree-val-few-may), is a small, mountainous country located in southern Nur. Its name directly translates to "By the river". As of 1424, Rivalfiume is the only directorial republic in all of Esferos and one of the smallest and least populated countries in Nur. Its capital city and largest city, Grankastello (1423 Census: 411'763 inhabitants), was built on the coastal regions of Rivalfiume, where the terrain is lower and more fertile. Most of Rivalfiume's cities are found on the coast or alongside rivers. The country is divided in 9 Departments (Fluvian: Dipartimenti), and departments are further divided into provinces and districts.

Rivalfiume's economy is very diversified, mainly lead by fishing, tourism, agriculture, raw materials (wood, high-quality wool, iron, aluminum, zinc, building stones such as granite, sandstone, limestone and, to a lesser extent, marble) and derivates (steel panels, either exported as is or transformed in many other products, stone slabs/polished stone used for construction, insulation panels, wooden furniture and tools, wood pulp, paper).

Apexiala has a Royal Family, however its powers are now largely symbolic only.
The current head of the Apexialan Royal Family is ♔ HRH Princess Katie Amari (aged 30), who has held the position since coronation ten years ago in 1413, at the age of 20.
Next in line to the throne is ♛ Crown Princess Imara Kamini (aged 23)
 
Government
Apexiala is a Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy, with Prime Minister Tyrus Omara as Head of Government.
A democratically elected government is responsible for most aspects of the Legislature and routine running of the nation.
All levels of government are expected to embody the principles of Equality & Progress.
The political establishment follows a trias politica model (Separation of powers), with the 3 separate branches of government:

Apexiala has a highly developed market economy, regarded as free, modern & efficient.
Much of Apexialas success can be directly traced back to its origins as an entrepôt (transshipment port), and its flourishing mercantile shipping industry.
Apexiala has nationalished the ownership of many core state-run services, particularly in underlying industries such as infrastructure, utilities, telecomms & energy.
Notwithstanding state run infrastructure, the nation remains overwhelmingly dedicated to free open market competition, and as such it remains very business friendly and attracts substantial foreign investments.
Much of the Apexialas early trading was in the export of tropical produce & livestock, however this has diversified substantially over the last several decades.
Various other sectors also contribute to imports & exports, including manufacturing, automobiles, petrochemicals, electrical equipment, technology, medical equipment & medicines, and many more.
The nation also has a well established Financial sector, which helps it to remain well placed on the international economic stage.
The city of Alowa is home to the Apexiala Trading Exchange (ATX) and is the headquarters for many Apexialan companies, as well as hosting regional offices for many international businesses.

Food
Apexialan food has evolved from a fusion of many varieties of international styles, and plays an important part of Apexialan culture.
As a result of the abundance of livestock & spices much of Apexialan cuisine is centred around meaty and spicy dishes.
Notable Apexialan dishes include Massawa Stew (Bison or Buffalo), Tamari Curry, Lemon & Sesame Chicken & Rice, as well as many popular street food vendors.
 
Music
Music is also a notable aspect of Apexialan life.
Most popular genres of music are: Alternative, Rock, Emo/Screamo, Metalcore, as well as various other subgenres of Metal.
Various electronic genres such as Dance, Electro & Trance also remain popular as well.
 
Sport
There is no official national sport of Apexiala, however there are a wide variety of Sports, Activities & Hobbies which are popular.
Active lifestyle sports and hobbies such as athletics & gymnastics, rock climbing, archery.
With it's many cities that line the coastline, water sports such as kite sailing & surfing are also popular.
Equine sports include horse riding, horse racing, dressage & show jumping.
Apexiala is also home to an F1 Grand Prix race in the city of Oasis each year.
More modern hobbies are becoming more prominent such as Esports & Gaming, as well as more niche hobbies like fantasy roleplaying tabletop games.

Most of the country sits just below the Tropic of Eli, placing it approximately between 17°N to 25°N north of the Equator.
Apexialas territory also includes Samira Island to the west.

Apexiala has a humid sub-tropical climate.
Temperatures are typically fairly warm all year round, with notably hot summers.
The southern & western areas of Apexiala experience regular rainfall, with a monsoon season that peaks in late summer.
Whereas the central & north-eastern areas of Apexiala experience very little rain for most of the year, with only very brief rainfall in summer.

The Founding Principles are the goals envisioned by Sekiya, Kalmach and Aukera when the NCC was first created. It outlines key areas that the leaders of these nations decided were important to promote in order to further grow Nur.

Members will refrain from any actions that undermine or threaten the sovereignty or territorial integrity of any member. Shared Goals: The NCC will promote peace, stability, and prosperity in Nur. This will be achieved through joint diplomatic initiative. Members will work together to address worldwide issues that may impact the NCC or the continent. Mutual Assistance: Members will provide mutual assistance in the event of any security threats or natural disasters. Human Rights and Environmental Protection: Members will promote and protect human rights. Members will also work together protecting the environment through joint conservation programs. GRANCASTELLO - Today we are taking a look at traditional Fluvian Foods that you must try if you visit Rivalfiume during the Chiaritura
(lit. the "Lightening"), when Fluviani welcome the milder seasons (though some tourists might still consider them colder than average!)

Starters
Pan de' Picchi - Pan de' Picchi is a staple of Fluvian cuisine. Most Fluviani would consider it a starter, but I could see it served in breakfasts
as well! It consists of Barley Bread/Black Bread with "Cace de' Picchi" cheese (a tangy, earthy spreadable cheese made with sheep milk.
The cheese has to come from specific areas of Rivalfiume to be considered authentic Cace de' Picchi.) honey and crushed nuts. Its name
means "Bread from the peaks" because most of the "ingredients" are readily found in the rural, mountainous areas of Rivalfiume. 
Below is a more reinvented version, which also includes fresh fruit such as apples or pears.

Main Course
Majestrau - Majestrau is a hearty traditional soup, perfect for every weather, be it the colder months, or be it during the Chiaritura. Many
majestrau recipes are found all over Rivalfiume, but one of the yummiest and oldest recipes of all is the Majestrau Borgherese (lit.
Bòrgheri-style Majestrau). It's mainly made of vegetables. Most common are cabbage, chard, leek, potato, onion, carrot, celery, and
last but not least, a bit of beans! Bonus points if you also use leftover bread. That's because Majestrau originally was a "poor man" recipe, 
before it hit the mainstream and became popular.

Second Course
Fish - Bacaléi - Bacaléi is cod that has been preserved by coating it in salt (the salt drains the fish of all its moisture and is one of the most
ancient methods to preserve food). To make a perfect Bacaléi, it's important to "de-salt" the fish properly: it should be flavourful, but
not too salty. As with Majestrau, there are many recipes that involve Bacaléi. Below is one of the simplest: Bacaléi Delicato (lit. Delicate saltfish).

Meat - Stufeto di Ajéo Piccaro | Costeto di Ajéo - If you're not a fan of seafood, this should do the trick: Stufeto di Ajéo is a delicious lamb stew. Below is one of my favourite iterations.

Not a fan of stews either? Can't go wrong with a good old rack of lamb! Below is a typical Costeto di Ajéo, with crust of herbs and breadcrumbs.

Dessert
Tortìn Nevebianca - I - and many other Fluviani - can assure you that despite the name, the Tortìn Nevebianca (also known as Spruce tip cake)is absolutely divine. Spruce tips have a very typical, strong flavour that pairs nicely with sweet stuff (be sure to also check out Fluvian spruce-tip
sugar!). If you're going foraging for spruce tips, always remember to follow sustainable foraging rules and check the Fluvian Foraging Manual

Cafè Barlotto - Last but not least, we have Cafè Barlotto (Barley Coffee). Barley Coffee is supposed to be a substitute of regular Coffee.
Before the globalization, coffee was considered a rare and precious item here in Rivalfiume, and so Barley Coffee was sold as a cheap
alternative. Note that the Barley Coffee doesn't have the same properties as normal coffee and thus won't help you if you're feeling sleepy -
a nice treat nonetheless, if you appreciate the milder flavour.

We are aware that polling like this isn't the most reliable source of information, but if most of the people (...that truthfully answered the poll!) that
are of school age believe that it's worth going to school five days/week, maybe more politicians should think about reforming it.
 

Laensio Mendini approves of NCC's new license plate regulations and
encourages further cooperation
WEST FAUTHUR - Fluvian representative and Minister of Transport Laensio Mendini signed the NCC (Nuran Cooperation Commission) legislation, proposing standardized license plates for safer travel between complying countries. He also added that "This is a big step forward", and hopes that "more countries will adhere to the regulations".
What does this mean for the average Fluvian?
The only difference between the old and new license plate is the addition of the so-called "Red Strip", in compliance with the new NCC regulations. This strip includes important information that eases car identification, such as the state flag and 3-letter code. Cars registered with the old license plates can still be used within the borders of Rivalfiume, but if you wish to travel abroad you're required to get a new license plate within five years. The cost for changing the license plate has been set to 100 ƒƒ, although additional fees may apply depending on the Department that you reside in.
As to comply to the regulations, All produced cars sold in Rivalfiume will be provided with the new license plates, beginning in July of 1423.
The license plates shown below are the standard version for commercial and passenger vehicles and the squared version, used by high power motorcycles and vehicles with square license plate holders.

UNK OFFICIALLY PART OF NEWLY ESTABLISHED NCC. WHAT COULD THIS MEAN FOR THE FUTURE OF KALMACH'S AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY?
Recent news involving the signatory by Asir founder and vice-president William Peisson, of a resolution to make standerdised Nuran numberplates, has been going around, and the automobile industry is scrambling to know what reprecussions this will have for the booming car economy of the UNK.
The Willsen Hessen administration has, after a long period of discussion, decided to set a deadline of March 1st for the final liscence plate design of each region. After this, car manufactures will have a period of 2 months to set up production of the new liscence plates. NCC liscence plates are mandatory by July of 1423. Additionally, a tax of 2% of the total car cost after external taxes will be introduced following this period. To change your previous liscence plate, to that of the all-new NCC ones, you will have to pay a flat fee of 5.000 kkr to the goverment. Additional fees may apply depending on the approved manufactorer handling your plate. Approved manufacturers confirmed are currently Asir, Hemlaf and Ordin. Additional manufacturers may be announced in the near future.
While a general design for the all-new Kalmachian numberplate has been drafted, regional variations, and minor changes will be previlant in the next couple of months. This design features the same-old Kalmachian standard layout for letters and numbers, but with the left side of the liscence plate being covered in a red square, featuring the Kalmachian 3 letter code, together with the letters "NUR".

You might be wondering when these changes will take place?
The effective change of these numberplates will happen july of 1423. Additionally, after a interim period of 5 years, a red-tagged plate shall be required for foreign travel. Perks of this change include free auto travel between NCC member countries, so no longer will you have to pull up your UNK passport to go to your weekend vacation in Fauther!
While more information is still being drafted, this is believed to be a massive development in the foreign relations of Nur.

The Infinite Empire of Aukera (Astintzen: Am Lòkhà Nha sho Auken Rà), known colloquially as Aukera, is a large nation situated off the Northern coast of Nur. Aukera is comprised of a main island, eponymously named, with over 400 inhabited islands within the greater Imperial Archipelago. Aukera is surrounded by the Shining Sea, with its nearest neighbour being Kalmach to the Southwest. The country is divided into 26 traditional regions, with 64 administrative cantons.
Archaeloigical evidence suggests Aukera has been inhabited since the Upper Paleolothic period (roughly 41,000 BF), with the first written reference to its people dating to the 1800 BF oracle stones. Between 600 and 500 BF, the Northern span of the island was unified by a single polity under the auspices of the Infinite Emperor. This event (dated by the imperial state to 534 BF) marks the year 0 of the Most Holy Imperial Calendar, and the foundation of the modern Aukeran state.
The fledgling state maintained claims over the entirety of the island since its inception, but was routinely engaged in civil wars, internal coups, and defense against outside influence to prevent the true suppression of other local kingdoms to the South and East. Beginning in the mid 7th century (the 1100s by the Aukeran Calendar), a series of conflicts and tensions with their Southern neighbours culminated in the true unification of the archipelago and the true birth of the Infinite Empire as it is now known.
The last reforms to the governmental apparatus came about in the twelfth century, where a series of populist revolts saw concessions from the imperial government and the introduction of a written charter to outline the scope of its power.

Overview
Ostronia, officially the Federal Republic of Ostronia (Kalmash: Forbundsrepublikken Ostronien, Orioba: Apapo Orile-Ede Ostronia, Ausa: Jamhuriyar Tarayya Ostaroniya, Ebo: Goomenti Etiti Ostronia), is a developing country on the eastern coast of Nur. With a population of 32.9 million, it is the third most populous nation on the continent and the tenth most populous in the world.
Humans have inhabited present-day Ostronia for tens of thousands of years. However, it was not until the early 12th century AF that Ostronia was first named as such by Kalmachian explorers.  From their early trade port at Stenhavn (present-day Gida), Kalmachian expeditions steadily expanded their colony in the search for more land and the sources of the gold, ivories, diamonds, dyes and other luxuries they had previously traded in. By 1228, the Royal Colony of Ostronia had reached its modern borders. For the next 127 years, the colony provided its overlords with various luxury and industrial goods, especially rubber and textiles. Kalmach settlers and missionaries contributed to the colony’s acculturation and the suppression of native cultures, including through the notorious dormitory school system. In the 14th century, however, the improving education of the native population led to growing agitation for independence, especially during the chaos of the first and second Kalmach civil wars (1314-1315; 1345-1347). In the 1355 Treaty of Gida, the United Nations of Kalmach formally recognized Ostronia’s independence. After independence, Ostronia saw rapid improvement in economic growth, literacy, life expectancy, and infant mortality, but this development slowed and stagnated by the 1380s. In 1390, the economic woes aggravated ethnic tensions and sparked a brief but bloody civil war, which ended with the help of Kalmach peacekeepers in 1392. After the civil war, as part of the reconciliation process overseen by the UNK, a new constitution was drafted which devolved some power back to individual states within Ostronia in a more federal system. Since the turn of the fifteenth century, a new development policy focused on education and entrepreneurship (popularly referred to as “New Adakunomics”) under the New Ostronia Party has helped restart sluggish economic growth and improve the lives of millions.
Ostronia is an ethnically heterogeneous country, with more than twenty recognized ethnic groups and four official languages. The largest ethnicity is the Orioba people, comprising 40 percent of the population. Other major ethnic groups include the Ausa and Ebo peoples, as well as the descendants of Kalmachian settlers. All government records, forms, official publications and road signs are written in Kalmash, and subtitled depending on the location in Orioba, Ausa, or Ebo. In the past, ethnic tensions have been the cause of significant violence, including the Ostronian civil war, but improved power-sharing between the national and state levels under the 1395 constitution have helped the country to remain stable.
Ostronia is a federal presidential republic where the president serves as both head of state and government. He can veto laws passed by less than 3/5ths of the federal legislature, the National Assembly, but otherwise must sign them into law. His cabinet appointments must have the majority approval of the Assembly. The president serves for a 5-year term and there are no term limits. The National Assembly, which drafts legislation for the entire country, is a unicameral body with 96 seats. Each of Ostronia’s twelve states receives the same number of assemblymen: eight. The third branch of the federal government is the High Court, consisting of seven judges who hear appealed cases and determine whether laws passed by the National Assembly and signed by the president are constitutional. Judges sit for life once appointed by the president with the approval of the National Assembly. Below the national government, each state has its own legislature called a State Assembly which may enact state ordinances so long as they do not contradict national law. Unlike the National Assembly, state assemblies are proportionally represented. The current President of Ostronia is Johannes Gbenga. The current Speaker of the National Assembly is Erling Adaku. The current High Judge of the High Court is Holger Hansen.
As a developing country, Ostronia has a GDP of $374 billion or $11,354 per capita, the second lowest on the continent. The country’s major exports include textiles, agricultural products, jewelry, diamonds and gold. The country’s major imports include wheat, rice and refined petroleum. Ostronia’s largest trading partner is its former colonial overlord, the United Nations of Kalmach.
Ostronia’s armed forces are geared towards internal pacification. The country has a small brown-water navy and aging air force. While the professional army is an all-volunteer force, male and female non-students aged 18-20 must serve two years of national service in the non-combatant Youth Corps. The Youth Corps is employed by the government in development projects including infrastructure construction, teaching and nursing. Ostronia has security agreements with its former colonial overlord, the United Nations of Kalmach, which include the indefinite lease of a naval and air base at Tristhavn.
