There wasn't even a mild warning about ToS guidelines here? Really? I'm pretty sure I signed up to this forum with the assurance that everyone else signed up to the same terms I did - no vulgar or hateful messages being one of those terms. For future reference: If you are going to war with words on a public stage, please use crafty and interesting words that are not so crude to at least try and entertain your audience. If there is a deep, hatred-filled conflict between future participating combatants, it should stay between them. There are multiple avenues both on-site and off-site for them kinda fightin' words. Medio, for what it's worth, I think you were well within your right to make that comment.

no TOS, it's whatever the owner and ADMIN says it is.

Kinda missed the point...

For reference, the Terms of Use:

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this bulletin board to post any material which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise violative of any law.

Bold mine.

I think we "old folks" have been left in the dust on this one.  It's the newer crowd that seems to be up in arms about it.  And frankly, I'm a bit surprised it's suddenly an issue.  That sig was there for quite a while.

The signature wasn't used as an insult toward me at the time and it has been my signature on these boards for a highly extended period of time. Half a year at least. Someone complained about the sig to Winni, who politely requested I change it, and I obliged. So in effect, Medio, you kind of did make it happen regardless of your position on the West Pacifican Totem Pole .

In any event, me removing the quote isn't the end of the world. I'd have liked to keep it though. :(

There was a lack of context and relevance that allowed the opportunity for a problem to arise.  I didn't like that signature, but I presumed there was a reason for it and let it be.  If I knew the context, it might not have bothered me.

Also consider, that it's best to consider the forum PG-13, as is the ingame forum.  Also keep the thought that players as low as ten/eleven pop in.  Really not something I want my 12 year old daughter reading and not understanding. Free speech is the ideal, but there are RL considerations that impose upon forum and game life.  Free Speech needs a concurrent expression of Respect for one another to keep things from devolving.

As to Terms of Service, even a hosting provider has a ToS that a domain/site owner needs to maintain. They usually focus on copyright infringement and pornography.  Too many legal risks for them.  Site owners needs for enforcement also are on the increase when governments look to pass additional regulatory legislation (like was tried with SOPA...and will be tried again until it passes).  Providers have been cracking down further on  copyright infringement, as RIAA continues to use it's influence in governments (Witness former US Senator Chris Dodd now leading RIAA and RIAA using the US Government to go after Kim Dotcom in New Zealand on the basis of how his clients used his service).  My provider for the Equilism forums does daily scans seeking copyrighted material. They expanded their ToS recently to include a section that all third party software must be kept up to date with the latest security patches and updates, or else they will block your account.  That is a result of the recent use of Word Press by botnets.

I do find it somewhat amusing that I can post in a thread and get numerous unwarranted 'abusive, vulgar, hateful' messages directed towards myself and no one says a word but someone posts an IRC quote in their signature and people get into a hizzy.

Yeah, must hack you off that you can't hand out warnings, delete or edit other peoples' posts on this forum.
