When I was young, my mother acquired sole executive tree decorating privileges. In her words "every time you people touch the tree it looks like a mess, and I'm the one who has to stare at it all month." She bought a tonne of silver ornaments and lights, and made a consistently good looking tree every year thereafter. Tyrannical? Probably. Nostalgic? Absolutely. I can't decorate any other way nowadays.
