    Saint Andreisburg, District 1, Dalimbar

    Night before Matchday 1

Saint Andreisburg is a beautiful city.

Sure, I understand my baseline is Wells, but I think that’s just a fact regardless. East Overthinkers isn’t exactly a destination for architecture. I’ve been to Aurum a few times, and they have some neat stuff there, but Dalimbar is something else entirely.

Hell, anything looks pretty after 20 hours of flight. But to be fair, since the NRUU(1) doesn’t have the budget for a private jet yet, they borrowed one from the TRY RL. Had to be the nicest plane I’ve ever flown on or ever will again.

The arrival in Saint Andreisburg itself was underwhelming. As soon as we got off the plane, we were ushered into a waiting room while Ambassador von Edelgard did our paperwork. It felt like hours before she came back with her staff, and they handed out “blue cards”. They’re apparently the only way the “Stafka” or whoever will let us in to the country.

“Your blue card must be on your person at all times,” Ambassador E said. “If at any point it is not, you’ll be issued a red card, and forced to leave the country.”

I laughed nervously at her joke. She shot me a look that could kill. It wasn’t a joke.

I retract what I wrote last week. Theresa Argent angry is no longer the scariest thing in the world. It’s Ambassador E now.

Once we hard our cards, though, we immediately got to actually see the city. Like I said, it was breathtaking. The streets were crowded with rugby players and fans alike. The buildings were simultaneously, like, elegant and imposing. It feels wrong to say, but it’s just so—so—foreign, I guess? Like being transported into a storybook. Also, for the record, that one movie in my childhood got it completely wrong.

Also it’s a hell of a lot colder here than Overthinkers. I think when they ordered team jackets, they weren’t expecting the World Cup to be in like, the northernmost country of the world.(2) They ain’t cutting it. Practices have been pretty brutal too.

I keep saying this, but Coach Ed has been great. The night we arrived, every bit as exhausted as we were, he got us all together and hyped us up. We were literally going where no Overthinker had gone before.(3) We may have been last pot in the draw, but that just meant we could shatter expectations.

He was on it again today at practice, too. There’s a lot of things up in the air with our group, it could turn out just about any way. Cambria’s far and away the scariest team, and Libterraria’s ranked 5th in the world. But what’s important is just getting past the group stage, and Coach Ed wants us to take it one game at a time. Play to our strengths and force the opponent to adapt.

Libterraria’s high ranked, but they weren’t in the World Cup last year, so who knows how good they still are. We’ll sort that all out on the pitch tomorrow. Assuming Ambassador Edelgard doesn’t sort us out first.

    Team Introduction

The 4th Rugby World Cup will see the debut of the Overthinkers National Rugby Team, or OT Rugby®. OT Rugby is built on the success of the nation’s own Tryhards Rugby League®, and stars a mix of the sport’s biggest names and some unsung heroes from inside and outside the TRY RL®.

Leading the national team in this competition is Coach Anton Edwards, known to Overthinking players and fans as Coach Ed, who led the Hestmere Thunder to four TRY RL titles in seven years before his retirement in 1420.

OT Rugby’s mascot is the Kite, a bird of prey commonly seen across the nation, selected by popular vote.

  3. That’s not 100% accurate. You are required to have a forum account to become a citizen, and you are required to make one forum post a month to maintain citizenship, but that has nothing to do with your “account”.

TWP uses the forum and Discord in parallel for different purposes. The Discord is better for real-time coordination and for generally chatting. The forum is better for our RP and certain documentation.

  4. Upon application, your membership in the Hall of Nations is tied to the resident nation submitted. If you wish to use a different nation in TWP, you may transfer your citizenship to another nation. To do so, simply state your new nation in this thread.

Less stuffy translation: if you swap out your TWP nation, tell me here or you will get purged.

    Maybe OTFB is ready, actually
    published 17-11-2022 by Ben Jarnagan

Okay, okay, maybe I was wrong, and boy do I hear about it when I am. Do I bring that upon myself? Probably.

In case you missed it, I went on the air this past Saturday after a rough first match day in the World Cup. This year is Overthinkers’ first appearance and it did not go well at first. The national team exemplified everything I hate about soccer and walked back to whatever yurt Hertfordshire has them shacked up in with a 1-0 loss. And I said, “Overthinkers Football isn’t ready for the world stage.”

I felt vindicated that afternoon when OTFB dropped another game to Dalimbar. Like, I don’t think the Dalimbari even knew they had a football team. If the primary objective of football is to get a ball into a net, then thus far we were doing it wrong. Look I know we’re supposed to be a “defensive” squad, but you can’t win without scoring a goal. Then my headache began.

My social media feeds were pinging nonstop before we were even halfway through that Driex Skad game. Cargan Valley’s finest, Lukas Reeves, owes me a drink after his two goals in the first 30 minutes. I love my listeners, but damn if they don’t roast me alive in the rare cases where I might be wrong

And in case my dignity wasn’t compromised enough, Reeves slams in another pair in a 4-1 victory over Tupmonia. Now all of a sudden, barring getting absolutely steamrolled by the host team, OTFB is looking at a Round of 16 berth.

With a win or a tie, OTFB is in. If Driex Skad ties or loses, we’re in. If we lose and Driex wins, it goes to a tiebreaker, and our goal differential is 7 more than theirs. Driex is playing Nagaraningrad, who is second in the group and has given up exactly one goal this tournament.

Which brings me back to the main point of this blog post, something you don’t hear me say often so I’ll say it again: Maybe I was wrong. Maybe OTFB can, in fact, compete in the World Cup.

Let me clear. We’ve beaten two teams that are also playing in the WC for the first time. I still say we’re lucky to be here. But I’ll admit, the fact that we got this far—the fact that we even have the chance to play teams at a much higher level—is something to be proud of. Like, good job, Overthinkers National Football Team. I’m only slightly mad that you made me look like an idiot.

Of course, I still gotta be a realist. All the easy teams, by design, are gonna be eliminated after tomorrow, and we’re likely to get crushed in the Round of 16. But hell, we did better than anyone thought we would, given that we’re a nation renowned for academics over athletics.

And Reeves, if you prove me wrong again, I will get on the next direct flight to Hertfordia and settle this personally. Oh wait, there are no direct flights to Hertfordia.
