Compound 26 "Deep Creek Lodge", Saint Andreisburg District - Shortly after issuing a broadcast to the nation on celebrating the achievements and values of Dalimbari warrior-athletes, Marshal Markus Briand joined the rest of the present members of Stavka in watching the Opening Ceremonies. There seemed to be a momentary pause of calm in the national situation, allowing for most of the high leadership of the Free State to be present in watching their men and women march through the stadium towards victory. Since lambasting and boycotting the previous sporting event held in rival Cambria, this was one of the first opportunities for the Dalimbari to showcase their fearlessness, determination, and performance to the international community in a... peaceful setting.

A few in Stavka continued to hold reservations towards participation. General Valerian Viktorov, Commander of the Far Eastern District, was deeply concerned that these games would only lead to unrest in areas he was sent to pacify. If the Dalimbari were to be a powerhouse in the games, as the Marshal thought they would be, then fine. If not? There was only so much censorship and propaganda which could cover over a disappointment such as this. His men would do their jobs, of course. If these... "athletes", who seemed to be picked out of the integrated populations, failed to inspire their kinfolk to the Dalimbari way of life, then other methods of consolidation would be taken.

  2. The official Dalimbari response to hearing Arifiyyah is to be flying in their supporters was:

"There is no try in soccer, only in rugby, a superior sport. We congratulate our squad for surviving the first round of this tournament of drama queens and debauchery. We wish for the extinction of all barbaric nations, particularly the non-Polaris nations, and as such, we will loosen restrictions on our squad for as long as they provide victory. Further, we will stop interference of television frequencies so that all who enjoy this... sport, are able to do so."

  3. The few Dalimbari who actually watch football were disappointed. First at not being able to tell who they were even rooting for. Second for the loss to Libterraria. Third, the signal kept cutting in and out, with roughly 1/3 of the match being broadcast in static. Every other channel was operating fine, except DalimbariSports 6 which carried the match.

It's tough to be a football player or a fan in Dalimbar.

  4. One of the big questions of the tournament so far has been.... Who is even part of the Dalimbari squad? Why, after their success in rugby, are they so tight lipped?

The answer to that is [REDACTED]. Football is considered to be an inferior sport in Dalimbar compared to rugby, and played more in the recently acquired territories in the east compared to the heartland. The Dalimbari Football League was instructed to put a team together, yet there is concern over the... loyalties of some members of the squad. As a result, the Dalimbari Stavka quietly decreed that the names of the squad would be withheld until each member's loyalties were proven. With victory.

Victory was arranged on day 1 and a draw on day 2 saw the Dalimbari squad keep their pole position in their group. The team is under constant monitoring to ensure loyalty.

  6. Match Report - Dalimbar (54.64) vs United Adaikes (53.96)

    Daaaaaaliiiiiiiimbaaarrrrr

Marshal Markus Briand was in the top box in Garrison Stadium, watching down at the impressive play from the Dalimbari squad. Although the match was in Dilber, the entire pitch of the stadium in Saint Andreisburg was turned into a television, broadcasting for the 30,000 joyous Dalimbari supporters in their temple of the sport. Outside the stadium there were multiple screens playing the match, as rugby has become an important facet of society.

     Daaaaaaliiiiiiiimbaaarrrrr

A thunder-clap erupted from the audience in both Dilber and Dalimbar. When the boys in blue entered the scrum, the thunder-clap erupted again. And again. Getting slightly faster each time from the crowd. Pushing the Dalimbari further and further down the field.

     Daaaaaaliiiiiiiimbaaarrrrr

The tie in the first half built the tension further. Going into the second half the team huddled and figured any goal was a good goal at this point. The UA team was a hefty team to push through, and if penalties were the way to go, fine. The UA squad were a respectable force, holding their line like a brick wall.

     Daaaaaaliiiiiiiimbaaarrrrr

A final victory of 9-5 cemented Dalimbar's place in rugby history. The boys in blue came fourth in the first tournament, and now are either going to be first or second. And for the Dalimbari, gold is the only option.

  7. The semi-finals were a show of quality in rugby, while surprises were limited. Zoran was projected to be a strong team with a 55.06 vs Kurabis at 52.90 and Zoran was home team. Dalimbar provided more of an "upset" as we were the away team, yet came in stronger at 54.76 versus United Adaikes at 53.89. Compared to last tournament, Dalimbar won their way to they to the gold medal match. Zoran will be their opponent, and it will probably come down to the last seconds of the match.

  8. Match Report - Dalimbar (50.74) vs Libterraria (56.74)

Nothing is permanent. Nothing is absolutely for certain. We may believe in one tactic only for it to fail. For a victory, we must see the whole board.

The conquest of Libterraria was swift and complete. 27-0. This was a team which earned the respect of Dalimbar for their skill and drive. They did not make it easy for the boys in blue to score. However, they were a pure defensive line with no opportunity for a dash down the field.

What made the crowd cheer the loudest was seeing the two juggernauts of rugby, H&J and Fujai, go down. Notably the eastern frontier regions of Dalimbar hold populations favourable to Fujai, so seeing that nation be ousted was a pleasant surprise for the Stavka.

  9. Day 6, the Quarterfinals of the Second TWP Rugby Cup, shows two things:

    1. Home advantage matters.

    2. Don't underestimate opponents, lest you be forced to go home earlier than you thought.

What happened? Dalimbar pummeled Libterraria despite a ranking disadvantage. Similar can be said about United Adaikes' win over the champions of the First TWP Rugby Cup, Hertfordshire and Jammbo. Kurabis and Zoran squeaked by with victories over teams their equal. All four winners had one thing in common: They were the "home" team. Now we see three newcomers to the tournament and the fourth placed finisher of the first tournament compete in the semi-finals.

  10. Match Report - Dalimbar (52.11) vs. Giovanniland (52.27)

Although a loss is a loss, it was not a heartbreak. The Dalimbari made sure they disrupted the long planning of their opponents from Giovanniland to score enough tries to advance to the Quarterfinals. This was particularly sweet for Dalimbar as the last time they met, Giovanniland "stole" the bronze medal from Dalimbar in the first tournament.

Compared to their other matches, it was clear that the Dalimbari were slower today. The plan issued by Colonel Nursan was to hold off Giovanniland from scoring too many tries and to not overwork his side lest they falter in the real competition of the tournament, the knock-out rounds.

Chain of command up to Marshal Markus Briand were aware of this, informed ahead of time that a small defeat is acceptable if the Dalimbari still made it to the Quarterfinals. The Marshal gave his support, speaking with Col. Nursan by phone late at night as they discussed tactics and strategies going forward. The key question both men asked one another is how to tackle the beasts of Hertfordshire & Jammbo and Fujai if the Dalimbari have to face those teams. "Explosive response" was the general idea put forward by the Marshal.

But back to today's match, two penalties in each half allowed Dalimbar to acquire 6 points compared to Giovanniland's 10. A victory in defeat.

  11. If only it happened sooner.

Hertfordshire and Jammbo came in to day 5 with 61.04. Fujai came in with 57.80. Their opponents were Big Bad Badger (48.95) and Fhaengshia (44.67). H&J and Fujai have been the top two teams of the rankings since they clinched the spot to the finals of the First TWP Rugby Cup. Plus, they both had home field advantage.

Badger won 15-13. Fhaengshia won 7-0.

If this had happened sooner, the perception of these two teams may have been different. The losses themselves didn't particularly matter as both rugby powers were already booked into the Quarterfinals.

But boy it hurt their rankings. -5.02 for H&J, -5.23 for Fujai.

Nations in bold represent those still in the tournament.

  12. If Day 2 was the Day of the Home Advantage, Day 4 seemed to be a mild case of Tie-Fever. Not one game, not two games, but three games saw ties. The "underdogs" of the three matches, Mediobogdum, United Adaikes, and Saint Mark saw slight points gains as a result. It should be noted that to be determined to be the "underdog" they will have the lower of the two pre-match ranks which factors in home-field advantage. I'll give you an example in the form of the Saint Mark vs Larxia match:

Both sides were relatively similar walking into the match, with Saint Mark at a 50.86 and Larxia 50.14. However, Larxia, by virtue of being the "home" side, get a pre-match rank of +3, meaning they were determined to be sitting at 53.14. Thus, although technically Saint Mark was higher on a side-by-side basis to Larxia, the home advantage to Larxia means that Saint Mark was the "underdog" of the match. And it showed with their 0-0 scores.

Bigger moves happened for Cambria, who halted their downward slide in their victory against Nark, along with Giovanniland winning over Bobki. Cambria gained 2.47 points while Gio gained 2.35. Hertfordshire and Jammbo keeps on dominating the top ranks, but because they are of such high ranking compared to everyone else, they don't gain significantly more points. Case in point, today's win over Recuecn only netted H&J a 0.32 rank point gain.

  13. Match Report - Dalimbar (49.42) vs. Bobki (51.40)

Now that's Dalimbari-style rugby. Take no prisoners. Leave no opportunity for the opponent to move or have any chance at scoring. Grind down the opponent and break their spirits. Just like on the icy battlefields the Dalimbari fought not too long ago.

Was 30-0 necessary? Yes. After the shocking loss to Min-Su yesterday, the Dalimbari squad knew they had to completely dominate the field lest they find themselves working in the Frontier Mining Project after the tournament. Landmines just don't put themselves in the ground, you know.

Marshal Markus Briand made a special point of phoning Manager Colonel Nursan and the rest of the squad before the match, letting them know he still supported their efforts against the enemy, that Min-Su was officially on the list of barbaric enemies that the nation would deal with later. But the clear message sent to the team is that a loss to Bobki would be unacceptable. The boys in blue clearly got the message, especially when they couldn't locate Special Police Major Trolio the morning of the match.

Right out of the gate play was pushed into the Bobki half of the field and... stayed there. The first half saw three tries and two successful conversions, for 19 points. The second half saw a try and two penalties, for 30. Jubilation was running amongst the approved Dalimbari audience, who must have been at times slipping into the culture of Dilber compared to their more traditional Dalimbari upbringing.

  14. Another day, another update to the rankings. As per usual, many changes to the rankings have happened, but perhaps the biggest upset would be the Min-Su vs Giovanniland match. Going in Giovanniland had 53.14 rank points and a home advantage. Yet, the scrappy team from Min-Su took Giovanniland down and gained 3.10 rank points as a result. H&J and Fujai continue to make strong cases for their sides to make it to the final.

  15. Match Report - Dalimbar (51.37) vs Min-Su (48.60)

While back home celebrations were going on, and while Captain Rybar gave a traditionally Dalimbari response to foreign media, the squad knew that their match against Mediobogdum was too close for comfort. Further, Major Trolio and his unit from the Special Police seemed to be spending more of their time glaring at the Dalimbari squad than doing their jobs of finding out as much information as possible about their upcomming opponents.

Min-Su was... a black hole for Dalimbar. It was only as a result of this tournament that the Dalimbari knew they existed. Min-Su made sure that Dalimbar would know they existed. Yes, Dalimbar was able to get an early try and conversion in the first half, but a brutal grudge match in the second half only resulted in two penalties scored for the Dalimbari. A loss. A loss Manager Colonel Nursan was sure to not hear the end of for a while, unless changes were quickly made.

  16. On day 2 of the tournament we can say it was the Day of the Home Advantage. Every single home advantage team, except in the Hertfordshire and Jammbo vs. Teralyon and the Fujai vs. Saint Mark games, saw victory. In the exceptions, we continue to see why H&J and Fujai are at the top of the rankings. But there is to be a case made for home advantage, hence why we factor in a home advantage in the formula. This certainly helped one side in particular, the squad from Nieubasria, which was inching closer and closer to absolute bottom of the rankings against a team despised and obliterated, the Order of the Marsupial Inductees.

  17. Welcome back to Rugby Ratings, provided by the Department of Sport of the Free State of Dalimbar. With day one action completed in the Second  Rugby WOrld Cup, we're proud to present stats madness throughout the tournament!

The biggest upset of the day easily went to the host team, Dilber. With them coming into this tournament with a ranking of 49.58 and playing technically as the "away" team, they needed to find anyway possible (with perhaps the use of some form of substance claimed to be "essential oils") to assist them overcome the Cambrian squad, which was sitting at 51.63 rank points. Add a "home" bonus of 3 to Cambria and one would expect them to stomp over the Dilber squad. But that's the beauty of rugby, expectations fly out the window as soon as the first scrum happens.

We also see our first tied match of either tournament, thus requiring a bit of explanation of how we account for ties. In the match between Kurabis (47.03) vs Nark (new, thus starting with 50.00), Kurabis was technically the underdog due to the lower rank points and not holding the "home advantage". Kurabis, because of the draw, was able to gain 1.19 points due to the following:

    D = ((50.00+3)-47.03)x0.2 = 1.19

Where Nark had 50.00 rank points and had a pre-match home field advantage of 3, giving Nark 53.00 pre-match points. Kurabis, as noted above, had 47.03. Thus, despite drawing, Kurabis was able to gain as they were not necessarily expected to win or draw against Nark.

With that being said, here's the results.

  18. Match Report - Dalimbar (49.96 Rank Points) vs Mediobogdum (50.00)

After a respectable fourth-place showing at the First TWP Rugby World Cup (though, tell that to some elements of Stavka, who demanded total victory), the boys in blue from Dalimbar were back. Facing them today was a newcomer from Doll Guldur, Mediobogdum. By mid-match the newcomers had earned respect from the Dalimbari after pulling into the lead. But it was the efforts of team Captain Theodor Rybar rallying his troops which saw Dalimbar prevail in the end, 18-12.

The first half saw the Dalimbari side score a quick try at the 5 minute mark, bringing them to 5 points. Sadly the squad couldn't seal the deal on the conversion, which must have made the side from Mediobogdum happy as they seemed to dominate play for the rest of the half. A fierce second half ensued, with Dalimbar scoring two penalties at the 55 minute and 68 minute markers, bringing them to 11 points. Finally, with 5 minutes left, Rybar furiously rampaged towards the Mediobogdum side after a close toss from left-winger Victor Labelle, the Dalimbari scored another try, this time with a successful conversion to bring it home for the Dalimbari.

"We have seen the enemy, and this enemy played well." Said Rybar after the match. "We will work hard to make sure we conquer all those who face us on the field."

Back in Saint Andreisburg, it was said that Marshal Markus Briand, the Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Free State of Dalimbar, was ecstatic with the result.

  19. Based on the rankings provided by the Department of Sports, we see the inevitability of the final matches. The team with the higher rank won, although for Hertfordshire and Jammo their victory was only clinched in extra time. Congratulations to the winner!
