Big-G of Neandertron Posted November 9, 2012 Share Posted November 9, 2012 I see a lot of old faces, I see a lot of new faces, I thought it would be nice to get to know a bit more about each other. I'll get the ball rolling, I played NS several years ago and did so much stuff I can hardly remember all of it. Some of the titles I remember from various regions were minister of defence, president, shogun, senator, and plenty more on top. I'm not sure I was ever big cheese but I was definitely some sort of a medium sized cheese. I've only recently started playing the game again after seeing it mentioned on another website and wanting to find out how much of it had changed while I was gone. Obviously quite a lot is different now but it's been a very pleasant surprise to see so many of the old guard still going strong and equally pleasant to see so many new people playing the game! IRL I'm a Welshman currently living in Manchester in England which is where I went to university. I've got an MA in International Political Economy and as such I am currently somewhere between being unemployed and a freelance writer, although more on the unemployed side of things. This obviously means I have a rather a lot of time to waste on the internet in between watching re-runs of star trek and playing video games! The last time I was here I was a fresh faced 17 year old (I think (and to be honest I was probably more pimply than fresh faced). I am currently a fairly beardy 23 year old. Then, I looked East, and took a giant chair. And now I flit about here and Osiris, sort of just taking space :-P IRL, I went to school for Poli Sci, going to get back into it and finish with English or History. punkdaddy Posted November 11, 2012 Share Posted November 11, 2012 I started back in 2004, a referrall from a place called Redscape.com where I played the game of Diplomacy. I've done a lot of things, been to a number of places, but by and large I have tried to test different political ideas through this game. My favorite memory of the game is early 2006 when I ran for Consul of the Merit against the Anti-Commi Clan. I ended up losing by a vote when we had a revote after the first vote was tied. I didn't like losing, but I liked my response to the loss which was one of the most political statements I have ever made in the game. I basically congratulated ACC and built up a lot of good will by not whining about the loss. I knew that if I took that route, whenever I ran in the future I'd win big. Sure enough a few months later I won in a landslide. I actually believe the thing that has kept me in the game is the fact that I am banned from TSP. In RL, I'm probably one of the most diplomatic person out there. The fact that this situation remains unresolved after seven years continues to intrigue me and keeps me going in a sense. Once that is resolved, I may retire full time. I miss the old days but am quite surprised so many people who were kicking about then are still active. Darkesia Posted November 14, 2012 Share Posted November 14, 2012 (edited) I started in January 2004 with a nation called "TryThisGame" or something along those lines. lol A few months later I made Darkesia and... several other nations. I decided that this game was a puzzle of unspoken and unwritten rules that I had to figure out. And to me, the only way to figure it out was to put a nation in almost every region of consequence. Not long after that, Dilber taught me how to use a proxy. I spent quite a few years perfecting my acting skills as several different personas. Darkesia has held several positions in many regions. Some of the more fun and memorable regions: TWP (of course) Gatesville The Pacific The East Pacific Lemuria The North Pacific LWU Nasicournia The Liberty League (I think that was the name of it) I was part of the RLA but can't remember what region I used as a base to get in. I distinctly remember Stars, but I'm not certain if that was Darkesia I had there. There is also a western themed region started by JAL that I remember being fun. But can't remember the name of it. I am pretty certain that I didn't have Darkesia in Invaders or TBH, but the people there knew it was me... I think. Well, they knew one of them was me. Heh... God I'm old. EDIT for the addition of RL Oh! Real life... IRL, I went to Indiana University for an MS in Optical Physics. So, obviously my favorite football teams are Notre Dame and Ohio State. Stayed in TP where I had the pleasure of serving in the Senate with Darkesia. I left there in late '07 and have been roaming since, though I've parked my WA in Osiris. Was also General Jackson in TP more recently after joining a 'Pro-Franco' raider region. So what lead me to NS ? An email from my first wife. She sent me a link to her nation (I think it was something like "Queen Marcella"), with a note saying "I thought you might find this interesting". It was Dec. '03. I made a nation...I have no idea what it's name was. I quickly ignored it, because I was busy with the holidays. The reason that she thought I'd be interested ? I had tried writting a book, 'Alexander of Albion', got to around 180 pages into it. (later, my half-sister and I wrote some short stories set in that 'world') The book was based upon an old hobby of mine when I was a kid. Back around the early 70's I started drawing continents and developing nations on them. I'd have explorers arrive from other continents, establish colonies...expand and conflict with native tribes.....develop nations, economies, governments, wars......track populations, economies, trade routes, government types...... You know, the original pen and paper version of NationStates. (maybe I should have patented the concept) I also drew individual cities at the street level, kept track of their populations, employment rates..... I also wrote 'newspapers' on a manual typewriter about all that. I still have some of them. Still have some of the maps I drew. There was a Top Ten Hits song list that included a song called "The Westwind Roll". Anyway, come January '04, I clicked the link in her email again and decided to create a nation again, since I couldn't remember the first. (Her nation had CTE'd.) I wanted to name it Albion, from my story, so the nation has a story already behind it. Of course, Albion was already taken. My earliest nations I'd created on my continents was "Paradise" and "Westwind". And so I created Westwind, which has continued to be my main nation/identity. My original 1970's Westwind....It's history begins when a colony of scientists in Antarctica declare their independence, and then must defend themselves with superior technology to fend off the attacks of the rest of the world. The most technologically advanced nation on the planet. When the new continent of Pacifica rises from the Pacific Ocean, Westwind is one of the first to colonize it. I wanted to found the region of Pacifica when I started NS, but again, it was also already taken. (when I post "Hail Pacifica!" in TP, it has an additional meaning for me ) The 2004 Westwind....is modeled on the story of 'Alexander of Albion'. The RP "Tragedy in Westwind" on the Equilism forum played out a conflict loosely based on the book, between Emperor Alexander and his son, King Adam. I founded a couple regions, purged TNP twice, couped Lazarus once, etc. IRL I am a software engineer who builds the front ends of web applications. Ithania Posted November 25, 2012 Share Posted November 25, 2012 I played NS for a year or two and decided to return a few days ago after a conversation brought back interesting lil memories. At present, I'm attempting to understand the many changes that I missed whilst simultaneously prodding any sleeping memories back to life. There's an inordinate amount of dust and cobwebs to clean out of my mind. With regards to TWP, I doubt anyone will remember my mediocre and transient presence here but my first instinct was to return to this region since I associated it with a great deal of warmth. I sincerely hope that choice wasn’t presumptuous of me and also hope that I’m not intruding at a sensitive time. If anyone does object then please don’t hesitate to let me know. However, if there are no objections and anyone thinks that an erratic, inane, and wistful person could be of any use with their efforts then I’ll be happy to invest my energy. It seems that I returned at an interesting time so I’d love to help in whatever way is deemed desirable. In relation to general NS personal history, I primarily focused on United Nations/World Assembly issues so was a member of several groups linked to that; was a rather incompetent Delegate for England; offered some assistance with a few things here; and did some rather immature things that I shan't be repeating. Although, I can only presume you think it's a positive due to Stockholm syndrome, the only way people could remember me is due to some kind of trauma. You have my apologies. It's been almost 10 years now, and I'm less than a month short of my 28th bday. For the past 6 1/2 years I've been working in a major Telecommunications and ISP in the Dominican Republic, which is where I'm from. And yep, I'm happy of being here.
