    Dear Minister Tyrio,

By the authority derived from our Royal and Elected Office, ultimately sourced by the Light that was revealed and confirmed by national consensus, we hereby authorize the Fuentana Trade Mission, co-chaired by the eminent Professor Edgar Biologicos of Spring City University and by our esteemed Parliamentary colleague Anne-Marlene Mahieux of the House of Luminaries, to represent one of our principal concerns in the Free Trade Act now under consideration.

Thus far, the terms of the Free Trade Agreement are amenable to us, with one exception. Chief on the minds of our citizens and therefore our leaders is the need to balance Free Trade with proper environmental safeguards. Our nation sits on an island that touches the Infinite World Ocean, the Barry Sea, the Darkesian Sea, the Yatasail Sea, and through these Seas, the Great Pacific. Moreover, many nations, including ours, depend on the ecotourism industry.

Recognizing the sovereignty of the great nations gathered here, as well as the practical realities involved—namely that the development of an environmentally-friendly free trade pact will be the result of a long-term process of investment and collaboration, we will limit our remarks to the following two point proposal that nations may apply as uniquely as needed.

    ·      That signatories of the Free Trade agreement commit to a three-year process of graduated improvements in industry and trade to ensure that Free Trade is also environmentally sustainable. Desirable improvements may include: investing in biodegradable packaging, minimizing the generation of hazardous waste byproducts by 20% by the end of the three year window, agreeing to randomized safety checks of sea, air, and land freight transports. Though each nation is free to determine the specifics for enacting such policies, the 20% reduction in any hazardous waste byproduct particular to the goods produced by their nation seems a reasonable goal that will ensure the region’s long-term ability to engage in trade.

    ·      That signatories also agree to outlaw the transportation of hazardous wastes without universally affirmed standards for the management of such wastes. This goes above national sovereignty: given the harmful long-term effects that things such as nuclear waste and harmful byproducts of any complex good, management of such goods must be stringent. The region cannot afford the effects of the accidental release of nuclear waste.

Our Trade Mission will continue the deliberation on the particulars and has full authority to vote for or against the final product on our behalf.

Please be assured of our hopes for a successful summit.

    (Spring City) — BREAKING NEWS
    By Creed Bratton, Jr.

A senior official in Fuentana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Fuentana and Sensorland will shortly formalize the Fuentano-Sensorian Alliance.

Speaking on background, the official noted that Sensorland and Fuentana have a long history of trade and mutual aid that has helped secure the Barry Sea and the Strait of the Sea Dragon as a safe and viable sea route for a number of friendly nations for over a century. In addition, the official recalled Sensorland's help during the Island War 150 years ago, an act that helped protect Fuentana's sovereignty from an ambitious neighbor.

"This simply formalizes and renews our longstanding friendship with the leaders and people of Sensorland," they stated. "It was really a gem of an idea by (Sensorland Coordinator) Joe Krantor. Maybe it is his swan song. With the way that Friendly Republic has supported us, we want to acknowledge that we would do the same in a heartbeat. And in any case, it helps put our small nation on the map."

When asked whether this will have negative repercussions on the discussed Free Trade agreement, the official stated, "I can only see positive outcomes from this. We've generally favored mutually beneficial policies. But for sure, it will require everyone at the table to listen to the concerns and contributions of both our nations."

Representatives from Baron Comte von Fontaine's office, and from the Prime Minister's office did not respond to a request for comment, nor did any representatives from Sensorland's government. However, The Fount's staff noted several late meetings involving representatives from the Sensorland Consulate at the Brunnenschloss, the Royal Palace, as well as several high-level meetings in Fort Triumph, the capital of Sensorland.

More to follow. Philip Schrute, foreign correspondent embedded in Sensorland, contributed to the article.

  3. Dear Minister Tyrio,

I write on behalf of Baron Comte von Fountaine IV and the Parliament of our word-loving nation, and also in the name of the commission of specialists jointly appointed and confirmed by our national leadership to participate in this Summit. We thank you for your initiative in organizing this. We will participate in this summit.

Recalling Fuentana's location amidst the great oceans and seas of The West Pacific, as well as our cultural heritage and the realities we face, our commission wishes to inform you and all summit participants that our special concern will be to balance the desire for Free Trade with proper environmental safeguards. Our nation will likely bear the brunt of any adverse effects of increased commercial shipping. Our ecotourism industry and our nation's own connection with the land and sea could be imperiled if the Free Trade agreement does not ensure environmental care.

That said, our commission, comprised of social and environmental scientists, also wishes to assure all of The West Pacific that we stand for the principles of Free Trade, which gives all nations the best chance of flourishing together. When the debate begins, however, we will draw attention to the necessity of environmental accommodations to ensure health and wealth for generations.

    Sincerely,
    Prof. Edgar Biologicos
Co-Chair of the Fuentana Trade Mission
Professor of Marine Biology, Spring City University

  5. Dear all,

When I started my nation and signed up on the forum, I was a little intimidated since it was clear that there are some long-time players here. Sorry for not posting sooner! It's also been a bit of a learning curb. It took me time to understand RMB etiquette with things like double posting.

I am Fuentana and I have been lightly spamming our RMB with puns and Haikus with some regularity, so this might be a bit of a delayed and unnecessary intro for some. It's been a lot of fun getting more involved over the last few months. I'm looking forward to more chuckles through the region's snark, wordplay, and RP.

But I do want to note that I'll be posting Haikus here in the Library and Coffee Shop section of our forum, as well as various RP stuff as I learn them. Probably a decent amount of my RP contributions (if valid; I'm still learning my way in these parts) will be cultural in nature, playing on some of my real life interests.

So I hope you'll visit the library from time to time with a cup of coffee in hand (or a dram of whisky) to see what the poetically just people of Fuentana are writing. Cheers!
