The economy relies heavily on agriculture, fishery, forestry and mining. After the overthrow of the last royal family, the country’s experiment with democracy quickly failed when in-fighting between major political forces weakened all, paving the way for a military strongman to take over as supreme leader. The dictator’s reign was short-lived when the military council overthrow him and establish a junta. A resistance force, formed during the reign of the dictator, continue to fight the new military government by guerilla warfare. The situation will be somewhat similar to what’s happening in Myanmar. There is a plan for the country to exit the military regime, but whether via a victory for the resistance force or via democratization is still up in the air at the moment.
