1421 Giovannilandian Chess Championship

The 1422 edition of the Giovannilandian Chess Championship has started! One of the largest and most famous tournaments in the entire country of Giovanniland, it takes place in Sonserina, capital of Varevenna Prefecture and also national center of chess, with thousands of fans coming to visit. Here is how this edition will be organized: three chess players from each of the 13 regions of Giovanniland, plus the previous year's champion Guillermo Uryth-Amorim, will be organized in eight groups of five players each. Following that, the two best players of each group will advance to the Round of 16, beginning a four-matchday knock-out stage that ends with the long-awaited final and third place match.

In the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Amore Gil Albrecht visited the tournament venue and gave a short statement, similar to last year's one, and each player showed up carrying a flag of their region after the speech. After the opening ceremony, players went to their accommodations in order to have a rest and prepare for the first matches tomorrow. The list of these players from all 13 regions (pictured above) is listed below, and following that, the recently-announced results for the group stage draw and tournament schedule are also presented.

As the screen presented the results, Carlos started talking about them. "Starting by Group A, we have a win and a draw: Octavia Zortelya comfortably won their game against Jorge Taresmyn-Tirord with their use of their favorite opening Queen's Gambit. Meanwhile, in the drawn match between Theobaldo Liangzhou and Clara Glenpersyth, we saw all pieces exchanged early as the players moved to a drawn endgame with only kings and pawns. In Group B, two upsets happened! The biggest of them was Lavanda Rosetta-Lyra's loss against lsildoro Artena-Santos, despite having an advantage of over 200 ELO points; the smaller one was Bianca Portevinne de Sá's win over Alberta Verlyna-Silva ranked 76 points higher. Group C also saw two wins happen, namely Gabriel Lival-Lumyn's expected win over Gilmar Ghunnesbert Vidal featuring a queen sacrifice to checkmate, and Herberto Giaverish's upset against Demetrio Carvalho Qwarnyi after the latter made an endgame blunder."

"Moving on to Group D, there we saw Gustavo Takeda-Bwaryk, 5th place in the previous championship, easily defeat Miriam Samabriva Santos and possibly starting another excellent group stage campaign like last time. On the other hand, the game between Gilmar Vankhangir and Ivone Lavro-Hamada, with a small ELO rating difference, was one of the shortest ones in this round as the players agreed to draw. In Group E, more draws ensued, not only between Jairo Ulunboryn-Farbal and Laura Arveredo-Amorant but also an unexpected tie of Margarethe Suleyman-Silva and Xerxes Altada-Linhares with a 300 ELO rating difference between them. As for the Group F, named the Group of Death by most spectators, defending champion Guillermo Uryth-Amorim started the tournament well by defeating Edna Celera-Tamara, whereas Victor Nyima-Lhamo edged out Adriano Velthyn-Elyse after a zugzwang position in the endgame."

"And there are two more groups! Group G saw a draw between Anairyth de Rwemendyn and Vitor Yorbal-Allamand happen after a three-fold repetition, whereas Amanda Girveandre del Valle, the previous tournament's dark house, won against higher-ranked Paloma Armelyen-Altada and promises another good performance this year. Last but not least, Group H—the only group with three grandmasters—saw one of them (Ulysses Havarainda-Nakamura) comfortably defeat Clovis Lavandula-Sheng, whereas the second one (Alva de Santo Abrento) could not find a way to win in a closed position against Tania Uryth-Andolina and eventually drew. The other grandmaster of the group, Carlos Neuryanth de Sousa, had his bye like the other highest ranked players of other groups." Following the review, Carlos then presented the rankings:

Carlos continued: "We're only in the first day, so the rankings don't tell much, because a player in first place in their group due to only one win could turn out to be last by the time the group stage ends. For those wondering about the points, a win in a chess match gives one point, a draw gives half a point, and a loss gives none. Furthermore, ties are broken by higher number of wins, lower number of losses, head-to-head score and finally ELO rating in this order. All the first three tiebreakers still result in a tie because only one match has been played, so players are listed by higher ELO rating." Finishing the report, he concluded: "That is all for today, and thank you for watching! The players will now rest for a day and then play their next matches on July 31st and August 1st, which means our next Chess Report will be in three days, so stay tuned!"

GM Alva de Santo Abrento, 2549 (-7)

Clovis Lavandula-Sheng, 2252 (+7)

Carlos started commenting on the results: "In Group A, looks like we have a win and a draw again! Giovanni Amdo-Gyamtso, the favorite in the match against Clara Glenpersyth, won comfortably after an open game ended in Clara's queen captured by a bishop in an interesting piece sacrifice. Meanwhile, Theobaldo Liangzhou got his second draw of the tournament, this time against Jorge Taresmyn-Tirord, with another drawn endgame. Group B, the group of upsets yesterday, featured more of them today! Especially as lsildoro Artena-Santos surprised the spectators once more with an unlikely win, this time against Alberta Verlyna-Silva, who now has two losses in a row. In the other match, Lavinia Paschoal-Harveyn did not manage to win against Bianca Portevinne de Sá despite an advantage of over 200 ELO points, and a draw had to suffice for the 1420 champion that was eliminated in the group stage in 1421. However, if Group B had surprising matches today, in Groups C and D it was exactly the opposite—every match was won by the higher-ranked player."

"In Group E, Milton Arruda-Kandray started strong in the competition through a defeat of Laura Arveredo-Amorant, whereas Xerxes Altada-Linhares upset higher-ranked Jairo Ulunboryn-Farbal to maintain a strong performance in the first two days, putting his luck on a well thought-out defensive chess style that quietly awaits a chance to strike. As for the Group F, it looks like Victor Nyima-Lhamo continues his strong performance, winning twice in a row whereas his opponent Edna Celera-Tamara lost twice in a row. However, the most interesting news is that Jurandir Delchiaro, the highest-ranked player in the competition and 2nd place in the last tournament, could not manage to win against Adriano Velthyn-Elyse despite a well fought game! A draw was seen by commenters as a weak start, and the multiple-time former champion is likely to need to step up his performance, as he faces current champion Guillermo Uryth-Amorim next round."

"Last but not least, two groups remain to be talked about! Group G's Amanda Girveandre del Valle continues her strong showing so far and promises to be one of the tournament's dark horses once more, as she defeated higher-ranked Oralino Khergyan-Gogmos. Meanwhile, the other match was a draw between Vitor Yorbal-Allamand and Paloma Armelyen-Altada. And finally, in Group H we saw Carlos Neuryanth de Sousa comfortably win against Tania Uryth-Andolina, whereas Alva de Santo Abrento drew her second game as well, this time against Clovis Lavandula-Sheng." Carlos then proceeded to present the rankings after that:

Commenting on the rankings, he said: "Well, one more matchday has passed, and we can see the bigger picture unfolding! Some groups, like A, C, and H, are very much still open for almost any result, as none of the players there have reached more than a single point, and in some cases there's only half a point between the first and last players. The second category is for groups B, D and E, where one player has taken the lead although still followed closely by others, and the ones at the bottom of these groups need a better showing in the next few matchdays if they want to save themselves from elimination. Last but not least, groups F and G have seen one clear leader, with something in common that both of these players (Victor Nyima-Lhamo and Amanda Girveandre del Valle) aren't grandmasters and of course not the highest-ranked in their group, so we certainly have an interesting situation worth keeping an eye on!"

He concludes: "Anyways, this is it for our Chess Report of the day. Our chess players will play the Matchday 3 during August 3rd and 4th, so stay tuned to watch their games live, including interesting matches between two Grandmasters of each group!"

After showing the results, Carlos started commenting: "Group A, firstly, saw two hotly contested draws between players of close ELO ratings! Giovanni Amdo-Gyamtso and Octavia Zortelya especially had an interesting closed game with almost no mistakes on either side. In Group B, meanwhile, former champion Lavinia Paschoal-Harveyn shows she's still strong even after being defeated on group stage last year, as she edged out fellow grandmaster Lavanda Rosetta-Lyra, while lsildoro Artena-Santos continues a strong showing, this time winning against Bianca Portevinne de Sá. Moving on to Group C, grandmasters Violeta Lavrenbert and Gabriel Lival-Lumyn drew their match that ended in a queen vs. queen standoff, whereas Gilmar Ghunnesbert Vidal stunned viewers after defeating Herberto Giaverish, coming back after two defeats on the first matchdays.

"Next up we have Group D, where the duel of grandmasters Cyro Monastir-Uryth and GM Gustavo Takeda-Bwaryk ended in a win for the latter, who finished 5th place in the previous championship, while the other match of the group saw a draw between Ivone Lavro-Hamada and Miriam Samabriva Santos. As for Group E, Milton Arruda-Kandray and Margarethe Suleyman-Silva, both grandmasters, faced off and the former had the upper hand in an interesting pawns-only endgame. Whereas Laura Arveredo-Amorant, 2401 was unexpectedly defeated by Xerxes Altada-Linhares, one of the tournament's dark horses as he tops his group. And in Group F, the game between multiple-time former champion Jurandir Delchiaro and defending champion Guillermo Uryth-Amorim was certainly awaited! Guillermo, using his favorite Sicilian Defense, unfortunately could not defend against a well-planned infiltration from Jurandir's pieces on his castled kingside, thus opening the door for a slow but deadly attack and checkmate.

"Talking about the two last groups now! Group G's grandmaster match had an upset, as Oralino Khergyan-Gogmos lost to Anairyth de Rwemendyn and must now win all remaining matches if he wants a chance at qualifying. Its other match saw Amanda Girveandre del Valle cement her leading position as she soundly defeated Vitor Yorbal-Allamand. Last but not least, in Group H, Carlos Neuryanth de Sousa won against Ulysses Havarainda-Nakamura, whereas Tania Uryth-Andolina and Clovis Lavandula-Sheng settled for a draw." Carlos then proceeded to present the rankings after that:

Commenting on the rankings, Carlos noted: "As we sail past the half of group stage, we can now see who are the favorites to advance to the knockout stage! Well, not for every group, as some like Group A, C, and H are still fairly open like I stated yesterday. However, as for the others: in Group B, we see lsildoro Artena-Santos on the lead and Lavinia Paschoal-Harveyn and Bianca Portevinne de Sá as the main candidates for other spot, for example, whereas in Group D the trio Gustavo Takeda-Bwaryk, Gilmar Vankhangir, and Cyro Monastir-Uryth all fight for the two spots."

"Next, in Group E, it looks like Xerxes Altada-Linhares and Milton Arruda-Kandray have fairly decided the group already, although perhaps Margarethe Suleyman-Silva could have an unlikely comeback. Group F, on the other hand, is similar to Group D in a way of having the three players of Victor Nyima-Lhamo, Jurandir Delchiaro, and Guillermo Uryth-Amorim seeing which two of them will get the knockout stage spots. Last but not least, the spot for Group G's leader Amanda Girveandre del Valle looks fairly guaranteed already, whereas other players like Anairyth de Rwemendyn, Vitor Yorbal-Allamand, Paloma Armelyen-Altada, or even last place Oralino Khergyan-Gogmos still have chances for the second one. Anyways, that's all for our Chess Report of the day, and I hope to see you in three days for the results and analysis of Matchday 4!"

Carlos started talking as the results appeared on the screen: "Matchday 4 saw many exciting matches as some players had the last chance to remain in the competition, or to confirm their qualification. Group A's Giovanni Amdo-Gyamtso is now qualified as he won against Jorge Taresmyn-Tirord, and the two players yet to decide their place Octavia Zortelya and Theobaldo Liangzhou have tied today. Meanwhile, Group B saw the biggest upset of the day when former champion Lavinia Paschoal-Harveyn could not defeat lsildoro Artena-Santos and settled for a draw—the only such score in the series of games between the highest and lowest ranked players of each group, as all other Grandmasters successfully won. In Group C, Violeta Lavrenbert is surely qualified as she triumphs past the now-eliminated Gilmar Ghunnesbert Vidal, whereas the match between Gabriel Lival-Lumyn and Demetrio Carvalho Qwarnyi had an interesting queen vs. rook and bishop endgame that Demetrio ended up winning after a blunder by Gabriel, leaving the question of who'll be second place fairly open."

"Moving on to group D, there we saw two expected results, with Cyro Monastir-Uryth and Gustavo Takeda-Bwaryk winning against Miriam Samabriva Santos and IM Gilmar Vankhangir respectively. The same couldn't be said for Group E, however—Margarethe Suleyman-Silva did not defeat Jairo Ulunboryn-Farbal despite having a higher rating, thus eliminating them both, whereas the two now-qualified players Milton Arruda-Kandray and Xerxes Altada-Linhares fought for who'll get the first place, with Milton winning. In Group F, where all eyes are cast upon for a reason I'll explain later, the match between Jurandir Delchiaro and Edna Celera-Tamara saw the largest point difference in the game, meaning that Jurandir did not even win a point for the win. On the other hand, in a very close match, Guillermo Uryth-Amorim performed a great piece sacrifice to open a chain of pawns that had left the game closed before, and paved the way to edge past Victor Nyima-Lhamo. Last but not least, in Group G and H all matches went as expected according to player ratings, and this also resulted in a similar situation to Group E where only two players remain and see which one gets which spot. Speaking of..."

Red Already eliminated from advancing

Carlos then started talking: "Anyways, I present the rankings after Matchday 4! You will notice they have some special colors, whose meanings can be seen in the color key above, indicating the status of players regarding qualification to the knockout phase. In order to remind everyone, in the Giovannilandian Chess Championship the top two of each group advance to the knock-out stage. Grouping similar cases into the same description, firstly we have Groups E, G, and H; they have in common that there's no mystery about who could possible advance or not—the two qualifying players are already decided, although they may switch places in some cases, which is also important. Secondly, the situation in Group A and D shows that we have one guaranteed player in each—first places Giovanni Amdo-Gyamtso and Gustavo Takeda-Bwaryk respectively—but the second and third players will decide on the final days who gets the much coveted spot on the knockout stage."

"As for a more interesting situation, let's look at Groups B and C, whereas only one player has truly been mathematically eliminated! Group leaders Isildoro Artena-Santos and Violeta Lavrenbert are safe, but anyone from the second to the fourth place of each group could reasonably achieve a spot, although to the detriment of the others. Special focus on Group B, where only one of the grandmasters Lavinia Paschoal-Harveyn and Lavanda Rosetta-Lyra will get to advance. Last but not least, Group F! Remember when I said all eyes are cast upon it? That is because we have three very good players vying for the top two spots—multiple-time former champion Jurandir Delchiaro, defending champion Guillermo Uryth-Amorim, and aspiring newcomer Victor Nyima-Lhamo! All of them have had interesting performances so far, and the catch is that none of them is guaranteed, as only half a point separates them. Therefore, be sure to follow the matchday of Group F for some exciting happenings! And that's all for our Chess Report of the day, I hope to see you in three days for the closing group stage results."

Carlos then started talking as the screen showed the results: "Many nice matches happened on the last day of the group stage, for example in Group A, where Octavia Zortelya solidified her qualification by defeating Clara Glenpersyth, whereas the draw between already qualified Giovanni Amdo-Gyamtso and now-eliminated Theobaldo Liangzhou means that Theobaldo has the interesting feat of being the only player to draw every match. Group B, meanwhile, was more surprising as the 1420 champion Lavinia Paschoal-Harveyn lost badly to Alberta Verlyna-Silva despite a ELO rating difference of over 300 points! This result, coupled with the other match in which Lavanda Rosetta-Lyra edged past Bianca Portevinne de Sá, means that Lavinia is unfortunately once more eliminated from the competition like happened in 1421. Another group with interesting results was Group C, where Violeta Lavrenbert won against Demetrio Carvalho Qwarnyi with her spot already ensured, while Gabriel Lival-Lumyn was unfortunately eliminated from the competition after being defeated by Herberto Giaverish, who took his place."

"Moving on, we have two groups D and E where all matches went as expected according to ELO ratings, although one of the winners Margarethe Suleyman-Silva had already been mathematically eliminated before so she could not save her performance. Group G and H, on the other hand, each saw one win and one draw—both Oralino Khergyan-Gogmos and Ulysses Havarainda-Nakamura could not defeat their respectively opponents Paloma Armelyen-Altada and Tania Uryth-Andolina, although Ulysses secured that he advanced whereas Oralino was already eliminated. And saving the best for the last, we'll talk about Group F! In a shocking turn of events, we saw multiple-time former champion Jurandir Delchiaro lose against dark horse Victor Nyima-Lhamo, in a game featuring a tough closed position and Jurandir's loss of a few pieces after a clever counter-attack that led to a long but eventually easy endgame for Victor. On the other match of the group, Guillermo Uryth-Amorim joined Nyima-Lhamo in qualifying for the knockout stage as he sailed past Adriano Velthyn-Elyse."

Carlos presented the final group stage rankings and started describing them: "Now that group stage has ended, we'll of course highlight and congratulate the 16 chess players who have successfully topped their group or reached second place, while also commiserating the other 24 that have been eliminated. Grouping each of the 8 different situations, we firstly have three groups in which grandmasters took all the spots: Group A, D, and H, with Giovanni Amdo-Gyamtso and Octavia Zortelya; Gustavo Takeda-Bwaryk and Cyro Monastir-Uryth; and Carlos Neuryanth de Sousa and Ulysses Havarainda-Nakamura respectively."

"All other groups, meanwhile, had one grandmaster and one non-grandmaster player advancing. Firstly, Group B was the only one in which the non-grandmaster player managed to hold first place until the end, namely lsildoro Artena-Santos with a surprising campaign! Its second place is Lavanda Rosetta-Lyra, who many spectators thought would be eliminated after a bad start of two losses, but persevered and eventually managed to take Lavinia Paschoal-Harveyn's place by having more wins despite the same number of points—thus eliminating Lavinia for the second tournament in a row. As for Group C, Violeta Lavrenbert is its clear leader throughout the group stage, followed by the two international masters Herberto Giaverish and Demetrio Carvalho Qwarnyi with the exact number of points, wins, draws and losses! Interestingly, despite Demetrio's higher ELO rating, he was defeated by Herberto on Matchday 1, therefore Herberto prevails and advances by the head-to-head score."

"Moving onto Group E, Milton Arruda-Kandray and Xerxes Altada-Linhares were already confirmed as the group's two advancing players, and Milton's win today only solidified that! On the other hand, Group F was far more intriguing, since I mentioned yesterday that none of three top players were guaranteed to qualify, as only half a point separated them. Oh well, with Jurandir Delchiaro's surprising defeat against Victor Nyima-Lhamo, the highest rated player of the competition and multiple-time former champion is also eliminated from the 1422 Championship, the first time this has happened for Jurandir! This unfortunate happening for him, meanwhile, means that Nyima-Lhamo and defending champion Guillermo Uryth-Amorim have both qualified for knockout stage. Last but not least, in Group G, we have Anairyth de Rwemendyn and Amanda Girveandre del Valle as the best players! It's worth noting that Amanda was first place in the group for quite a while, but today slipped to second given her loss to now-first place Anairyth."

1422%20Giovannilandian%20Chess%20Champio

After that, Carlos presented the long-awaited knockout stage brackets! "Here we can see each side of the bracket! Looks like we have a stronger side featuring almost entirely Grandmasters, whereas in the other side we have Candidate Masters, International Masters and even a player yet to achieve a title. We can make a comparison with the 1421 Championship—last year we had nine Grandmasters, three International Masters, two Candidate Masters, and two title-less players, while this year we have eleven Grandmasters, two International Masters, two Candidate Masters, and one title-less player. Therefore, with two more Grandmaster, this bracket will certainly prove to be interesting!"

Lastly, Carlos finishes the report by saying: "Anyways, that's it for our Chess Report of the day! Watch the remaining chess players play these matches on the days of August 12th and 13th, and stay tuned for another Chess Report in three days!
