  1. The Issue: #373: Devil and the Deep Blue Funding Gap [New Vegas; ed:Lenyo] The Issue A group of scientists have come to your office hoping for grants to explore the deep blue sea. The Debate 1. "Our lack of knowledge of the ocean is unacceptable!" lectures Jacques Zissou, Emeritus Professor of Marine Biology. "We know less about the ocean floor than we do the lunar surface. The dearth of research is absurd! Were the government to provide more funding, we could perform studies on marine life, underwater volcanoes, currents, and more. The possibilities are endless. Sure, it'll cost a pretty @@CURRENCY@@, but the dissertations will be enthralling." 2. "Oh sure, let's spend millions of @@CURRENCY@@s to find out what's in the ocean. Oh wait, I can already tell you: it's just WATER," your budget advisor remarks sarcastically. "There is no point in spending tax money to know what kind of dirt is on the ocean floor. The government should scrap all research projects designed without real economic benefit. The last thing @@NAME@@ needs is yet another harebrained scheme to study the mating habits of dolphins or something comparably ridiculous." Points to pay attention to: Option 1, “it'll cost a pretty @@CURRENCY@@”: An indication that the Tax Rate will increase. Option 2, “the government should scrap all research projects designed without real economic benefit”: An indication that Scientific Advancement will suffer. Actual results: Option 1 in an Anarchy with its Freedoms at 94/97/94 had the following effects:Tax Rate: 43.2 → 43.5 Education spending: 20.8 → 21.0 (sectors affected: Commerce & Welfare, each -0.1) Murder cause of death: 1.8 → 1.6 (causes augmented: Old Age & Heart Disease, each +0.1) Primitiveness & Scientific Advancement remained unaltered (probably due to rounding) Weather: -25 → -26 Safety, Safety from Crime ↑, Toxicity, Weaponization ↓ Option 1 in an Anarchy with its Freedoms at 87/98/91 had the following effects:Tax Rate: 25.2 → 25.4 Education spending: 26.5 → 26.7 Murder cause of death: 0.8 → 0.7 (cause improved: Old Age +0.1) Primitiveness: -184 → -185 Scientific Advancement: 187 → 188 Weather: -97 → -98 Safety, Safety from Crime ↑, Toxicity, Weaponization ↓ Option 1 in an Anarchy with its Freedoms at 92/97/96 had the following effects (only primary stats recorded):Primitiveness: -144 → -145 Weather: 8 → 7 Safety, Safety from Crime ↑, Toxicity, Weaponization ↓ Suggestions: If you are after Scientific Advancement, choose Option 1 (although the positive effect is marginal); be prepared for slightly higher Taxes and slightly worse Weather. As an added bonus, your nation will become safer too. If you are after higher Primitiveness or a lower Tax Rate, then choose Option 2. If you don't see that either Option's benefits are justified by its side effects, then just dismiss the issue.
  2. To give you actual figures, these are Scientific Advancement results from Option 4 in developed nations (it is one of the best issues one can get for this purpose): 96 → 114 101 → 117 129 → 136
  3. Sorry for the somewhat delayed response, Kingstononia; I'll give you a brief report and I'll post more detailed data as soon as I'm back at my base. Options 1, 2 & 3 increase Defense Forces, Weaponization and Taxation, they decrease Pacifism, and they increase some of your Industries. Option 4 increases Defense Forces slightly more than the first three Options; it also increases Weaponization and Taxation, it decreases Pacifism and Primitiveness, and it increases Scientific Advancement and Information Technology. Option 6 increases Pacifism and decreases Defense Forces and Taxation.
  4. Eli, I went today to add Issue #455 to the Index (something a mod would be able to do), but I had no mod powers upon that thread — neither was I able to edit the title of a thread I wan't the OP of (another thing a mod would be able to do). I think the key maybe lying in the fact that the subforum is led by Minister Of NS Daily Issues, but that list is currently empty — meaning that Drachmaland hasn't been given yet the required masking for being the mod there.
  5. Please pin+lock: http://www.westpacific.org/forums/index.php?/topic/1661-ns-daily-issues-index/
  6. When you have a question relating to an Issue, please first find its thread from the list below, read it and then post what else you need to know (or hasn't been already covered). Here, in the NS Daily Issues subforum, there is no gravedigging rule — as long as your post is relevant to the topic. How to find an Issue's number: A. When your hover over the Issue, look on the bottom-left area, at the number on the URL: B. Alternatively, when you are on the specific Issue page, look at either the URL or the national paper: ================================================================================================================================================================= Index of all NS Daily Issues #000: Should Democracy Be Compulsory? #001: Where's The Love Gone? #002: Reclaim The Streets! #003: Harry Potter Censorship Row #004: Economic Collapse Looms! #005: Child Casino Shock #006: Appointment Of Spiritual Advisor #007: Animal Liberation Front Strikes Again #008: Nudists Demand Time In Sun #009: @@ANIMAL@@s On The Dinner Table? #010: Social Inequality Reaching Embarrassing Levels #011: People Request Not So Much Dictatorship, If That's All Right #012: Death Penalty On Agenda #013: Too Much Yakking, Already, Say Delegation #014: Military Demands Increased Spending #015: More Police Needed #016: @@MAJORINDUSTRY@@ Workers Strike! #017: Corporations Demand Political Say #018: Citizens Struggle Under "Unfair" Tax Burden #019: @@NAME@@ Awash With Red-Rimmed Eyes #020: Gunman Kills Three #021: Police Consider "Big Brother" Anti-Crime System #022: Nazi Sympathizers Plan Rally #023: Uranium Deposit Promises To Enrich @@NAME@@ #024: Budget Time: Accountants Excited #025: Cloning Research Promises New Breakthrough #026: Compulsory Organ Harvesting Proposed #027: Cash for Colons? #028: Cancer Sufferer Demands Euthanasia Bill #029: Minorities Demand Representation In TV Soaps #030: Auto Industry Struggles Against Foreign Imports #031: Get Efficient, Private Sector Tells Nature #032: One Wife Is Never Enough, Say Polygamists #033: Genetics Brings New Life to Extinct Species #034: Don't Puff On Me, Say Non-Smokers #035: Refugees Want To Call @@NAME@@ Home #036: International Community Comes Doorknocking #037: Traffic Cops Needed on Information Superhighway? #038: @@NAME@@ Looks to the Stars #039: Scandal Rocks @@NAME@@'s Government! #040: Hukd on Fonix Workd 4 Me! #041: Software Giant Stomps on Competition #042: Turn Down That Racket, Say Morality Police #043: Prisoners Demand Elbow Room #044: No Pain, No Gain! #045: Baseball League Steps Up To The Plate #046: Jennifer Government Censorship Row #047: The Great Wall of @@NAME@@? #048: Give Us Healthcare Or Give Us Death! #049: Diving For @@CURRENCY@@s #050: Whips, Chains, And Leather, Oh My! #051: Streaker in Snooker Game Fiasco #052: Is It Art Or Is It Porn? #053: Orbital Armageddon? #054: Time To Put The Older Senators Out To Pasture? #055: Bigtopian Protesters Cry For Full Integration #056: "Give Us Money!" 8. For the record, this is Issue #433: The Worst Storm To Hit @@NAME@@ Since...Yesterday? [Eaischpnaeieacgkque Bhcieaghpodsttditf; ed:Golgothastan] Let us make clear that Option 3 has a steep adverse effect in the Weather and in the Environmental Beauty — although Eco-Friendliness increases. These are the effects of Option 3 tested on a Civil Rights Lovefest with its Freedoms at 75/73/78 (that nation was only fifteen-days old at the time): Business Subsidization: 10 → 9 Defense Forces: 29 → 28 Eco-Friendliness: 1 → 11 Environmental Beauty: -43.4 → -61.4 Godlessness: 25 → 26 Human Development Index: 57 → 56 Law Enforcement: 16 → 15 Lifespan: 10 → 9 Pacifism: -12 → -10 Public Healthcare: 10 → 9 Public Transport: 8 → 7 Religiousness: -10 → -11 Safety: 145.826 → 140.32 Safety from Crime: 37.208 → 35.706 Toxicity: 35.142 → 56.146 Unexpected Death Rate: -10 → -9 Weaponization: 11.791 → 13.293 Weather: -14 → -34 Welfare: 29 → 28 Option 2 was selected in an Anarchy with its Freedoms at 80/97/92, in the hopes of its Economy getting stronger; there was no visible effect in the Economy (or the other two Freedoms), but with Economies at the Frightening level it's always difficult to know whether the Economy would get weaker or stronger if it were at a lower level (and to what degree). Same Option 2, at a Corporate Police State nation with 25/99/27 Freedoms, didn't affect Economy either (again, same rationale). So, summarizing: Option 1 is against pro-market. I'd expect Safety to increase — and Taxation too. In your case it most probably won't hurt a well-established 100/100 Economy, but weaker ones might be affected adversely. Option 2 won't hurt the Economy, but I'd expect Safety to decrease — while Taxation increases, too. Option 3 is a very strange one, increasing Eco-Friendliness while hurting Environmental Beauty. Option 4 is the classic Devout-driven decision, increasing Religiousness and Primitiveness. Option 5 decreases Compassion.
  9. Seriously then, in #61 I'm referring to a number of different regions.
  10. It is, unless you want very low Business Subsidization.
  11. Keep in mind that Option 3 hurts the environment without necessarily boosting the Economy; in a Father Knows Best State nation with its Freedoms at 66/74/28, Option 3 left Economy (along with the other two Freedoms) unchanged.
  12. Like I said for Option 3, it does not seem to have any significant effects (especially at the three Freedoms); tested it at another Civil Rights Lovefest —this one with Freedoms at 79/58/77, i.e. less developed and well-established than Drachmaland— and there was no change.
  13. Option 1 in a nation of Iron Fist Consumerists (with its Freedoms at 29/91/12) decreased Political Freedom (from 12) to 10.
  14. There will be a number of pinned threads in the subforum — one of them being the master index of all issues.
  15. A Spy asking the Intel DA for intel?
  16. I'll have to make some tests, before committing to an outcome in such a case. Personally I would choose Option 3 in a fitting nation not with a goal of helping Economy or Employment, but for boosting Technological Advancement, and Manufacturing.
  17. The Issue: #449: A Big Fracking Problem [Czechostan; ed:Nation of Quebec] The Issue Natural gas extraction has been thrust into the political spotlight after a corporation proposed utilizing hydraulic fracturing to boost the production of shale gas. After weeks of protests, a crowd of lobbyists and environmental protesters have barged into your office and demand that you finally make a decision. The Debate 1. "Any opposition to hydraulic fracturing has been born out of ignorance," claims Shale The Love lobbyist @@RANDOMNAME@@ after tossing some impressive looking pie charts on your desk. "If we further hydraulic fracturing, we can finally be independent of foreign natural gas. Do you really want to continue paying dictatorships like Maxtopia for their expensive oil? Just think of the advantage producing our own natural gas will give us. Look at the charts that clearly show how many jobs this will create in rural areas. We should be encouraging fracking operations and cracking down on these environmental terrorists who would be happy to send us back to the Stone Age." 2. "I don't think you understand the magnitude of these environmental issues," says @@RANDOMNAME@@, the organizer of the anti-fracking protest movement No Fracking Way. "Fracking can pollute the air and contaminate groundwater with toxic chemicals, which will end up in million of people's drinking water. Weren't you guys paying attention when fracking operations caused all those earthquakes in Blackacre? Never mind that they're on a fault line! We must put an end to fracking and start investing into green energy sources like wind, solar, and tidal power. We'll never run out of those clean energy sources, but we will run out of clean air to breathe." 3. "There's always room for compromise," chimes in @@RANDOMNAME@@, one of your top aides famous for diffusing tension in your office. "We obviously can't ignore the benefits of fracking, but we can't turn a blind eye to the impact it would have on the environment either. Why not allow fracking, but only in areas of @@NAME@@ where there are no major populated areas? I hear that the land in the Northern @@ANIMAL@@ Mountain Range is just ripe for hydraulic fracturing. There is a @@ANIMAL@@ preservation area nearby, but it's not like they're going to be protesting." Points to pay attention to: Option 1, “cracking down on these environmental terrorists”: A clear indication that freedom of speech is impaired, and thus Civil Rights will suffer. Option 2, “[...] and start investing into green energy sources”: This option is not just anti-fracking, but it is also pro-environment (it provides an alternative). Option 3, “there is a @@ANIMAL@@ preservation area nearby”: This option is NOT middle-ground (as falsely presented), because the environment will still suffer. Actual results: Option 2 in Drachmaland (Civil Rights Lovefest, 88/100/91), which already has a pristine environment, had the following effects:Tax rate became 91.2% (from 91.0%) Environment spending went up, as well as Education (to a lesser degree). The money came from Healthcare, Commerce, and Public Transport (which decreased). Heart Disease cause of death went significantly down, while Old Age and Lost in the Wilderness went up. Eco-Friendliness, Employment, Environmental Beauty, Health, Human Development Index, Income Equality, Lifespan, Safety, Scientific Advancement, Weather: increased. Mining, Most Pro-Market, Obesity, Toxicity, Unexpected Death Rate, Wealth Gaps, Weaponization: decreased. Option 2 in an Anarchy (96/98/100) with a mediocre environment exhibited a striking difference: Tax Rate went down to 36.6% (from 39.7%). In governmental spending, more areas were decreased (compared to Drachmaland). This country had a Cancer rate of 5.1% and it vanished! Suggestions: If you are pro-environment, choose Option 2. If you don't have a good environmental state, and you want to change that, choose Option 2. If you are hardcore pro-market and you don't care about the environment, then choose Option 1. If you are a Psychotic Dictatorship and you want to keep your Economy imploded as well, then dismiss the issue. This is WIP and the issue brand new, so expect more stats coming in soon. If in doubt, just ask — that's what this thread is for, anyhow.
  18. Even with an editor, there are still mistakes that slip through; so there's an ad hoc thread in the NS forum for reporting them.
  19. Obviously Issue Mods can edit their own issues, if they wish.
