The Republic of Makernika is a tiny, safe nation, renowned for its barren, inhospitable landscape, state-planned economy, and compulsory military service. The democratic population of 7 million Makernikans are free to do what they want with their own bodies, and vote for whomever they like in elections; if they go into business, however, they are regulated to within an inch of their lives. The medium-sized, liberal, outspoken government juggles the competing demands of Welfare, Healthcare, and Defense. The average income tax rate is 38.6%, but much higher for the wealthy. The fair Makernikan economy, worth 244 billion usds a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a slick, highly efficient black market in Woodchip Exports, Retail, Uranium Mining, and Arms Manufacturing. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is 34,939 usds, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 2.1 times as much as the poorest. The state auctions off combat drones to fund war reparations, businesses are scrambling to adapt to the government's mandate that 'time and measurement no longer exist', Makernika is notorious for its citizens' infidelity, and the government now pays the "Really Awesome Super Heroes" (RASH) to catch evildoers. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown. Makernika's national animal is the duck, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to toxic air pollution.
