Election '23: NMSD clinches a victory, forms coalition with the Socialist Yellowists

PORT KINGSLEY - The results are in from last night's election: the NMSD will stay in government, but just barely. They won 114, taking a major fall from the 179-seat majority they had going into this election.

The NMSD has announced it will form a coalition with the Socialist Yellowists, with their leader Henning Helgeland becoming Prime Minister. In a statement, Helgeland said the following:

"I am honored to have been chosen to serve as Prime Minister. We are committed to building a fairer society for all of our citizens. I know our parties have had disagreements in the past, but I am confident we can put our differences aside and work in the interest of the people."

The Yellowists made gains at the expense of both the NMSD and the Civic Alliance, taking seats in their strongholds. This caused the Civic Alliance to fall to 26, down from the 45 they had at the last election.

Though the NMSD's power in parliament may have weakened substantially, it did have one victory: Lakatos Lajos, former two-term Governor of Calpesia and acting Chancellor General, won the CG elections. He defeated Civic Alliance candidate Femke Nowak, a former prime minister from 1397 to 1400.

Borsch: Bouchere in coma, CG election to be held during federal elections

PORT KINGSLEY - PM Magdalene Borsch has announced that CG Valter Bouchere has been placed in a medically induced coma. At a conference in Port Kingsley, she said the following:

"To my knowledge, Mr. Bouchere has been placed into a medically induced coma as of the night of the 25th. I have been told the doctors did this to try and allow his brain to heal, though with the severity of the injuries they do not expect him to wake up from this."

Earlier in February, Bouchere had fallen at his residence in Smoland. He was initially coherent and recovering well, but in March he declined significantly and was hospitalized a second time.

Borsch announced that the Chancellor General election will be held alongside federal elections. She also revealed that Bouchere has been designated as "unable to continue the office" and Lakatos Lajos, two-term Governor of Calpesia, will take the office as acting Chancellor General until these elections.

Election '23: PM Borsch will stand down as Leader of the Social Democrats
SMOLAND — At a press conference in Smoland yesterday, PM Magdalene Borsch has announced she will step down as Leader of the NMSD and will not seek re-election in May's federal elections.

Borsch's government has been mired in scandal in recent months, including a voter suppression scandal during the Calpesian provincial elections in January. The scandal led to massive outrage and the resignation of multiple ministers, most notably Viktor Kiraly, the Minister of Interior Affairs. Another scandal included accusations of nepotism with awarding government contracts after Electrica, an energy company owned by Borsch's brother Peter, was awarded a contract to provide electricity to areas in southern Crupsea.

In a statement, she said the following:

"As many of you may know, I have always tried to work in this country's best interests. However, I cannot continue my duties as Prime Minister if I cannot lead this country effectively. The people want a government they feel they can trust, and it is evident to me that they do not feel this government can be trusted. It's been an honor to serve as Prime Minister, but I believe it's necessary for me to step down and let new leadership take the reins in order to regain trust in the government and in the NMSD."

A leadership election is expected to occur next month.

The Federal Republic of Noton Mast

    BASIC OVERVIEW

Noton Mast, officially the Federal Republic of Noton Mast, is a small country covering 607,194 km of land in northeastern Nur. It borders Apexiala to the east and Fauthur to the south. It is a federal country, with about 11.7 million people living in its 6 provinces and territories. Its capital is at Port Kingsley.

Noton Mast was formed in the 1000s, starting with a personal union between the then-independent states of Choira and Calpesia. Crupsea and the Rhett Territory both joined in the 1010s. Ossory was annexed into Noton Mast as the Ossorian District in 1022.

It was then colonized by the United Nations of Kalmach from 1122 to 1355.

Growing discontent with the subsequent governments led to Joseph Calambari and his National Unity Party taking control in May 1369. Calambari's tenure as Prime Minister would see widespread human rights abuses, government corruption, and crackdown on dissent.

He would lead for 18 years from 1369 to 1387, when riots took place across the country over a flight forced to land in Calpesia, leading to the violent overthrow of his government. Bridgit Bouchard, an opposition MP, would then become Prime Minister, first in an interim position and then after 1387's federal elections.

    PROVINCES AND TERRITORIES OVERVIEW

    map2-Recovered.png.dcf3b9da24313e2eb0f016931fb942fb.png

As previously mentioned, Noton Mast is made up of six provinces and territories: the provinces of Choira, Crupsea, Ossory, Calpesia, and the territories of the Rhett Territory and the Federal District.

All provinces and territories have the same powers accorded to them; the Territory of Rhett retained its name upon its accession to the Republic.

The most populous province is Choira (CH), with 4,938,015 people living in the province. Major cities in the province include its capital Caithness, Helmfeld (20 km west of Caithness), and Cumamara (on the border with the Federal District).

    POLITICS OVERVIEW

As of writing, the current prime minister is Magdalene Borsch of the Civil Alliance, and the Chancellor General is Valter Bouchere.

The Prime Minister is the head of government. They are responsible for the day-to-day running of the country, holding executive power.

An election is usually held in the first half of May. To start the elections process, the Prime Minister must request the Chancellor General to allow their resignation as Prime Minister, dissolve their government, and hold elections, of which the Chancellor General can theoretically either deny or accept the request; however, there has never been a record of a Chancellor General denying a request.

After an election, the Chancellor General nominates a candidate for Prime Minister (usually the leader of the party which came first in the election), which is then submitted to the Parliament for a vote. If the vote passes, the Prime Minister is elected and can then begin the process of forming their government, appointing MPs to the various ministries.

    LAW AND JUSTICE OVERVIEW

The court system is managed by the federal Ministry for Justice through the Department of Courts and Jails. Provincial and territorial courts are under the purview of that province's Ministry of Justice or its equivalent. All court cases in Noton Mast are decided by a jury.

The lowest level of federal court is the Federal District Courts, of which there are three; the Southern District Court (covering Calpesia and Choira), Ossorian Federal District (covering Ossory), and the Northern Federal District (covering the Rhett Territory and Crupsea).

The Federal Appellate Court in Smoland is the second level, overseeing cases appealed from the Federal District Courts.

Debate devolves to punch-up on Parliament floor

PORT KINGSLEY — Tensions flared yesterday as a fistfight between MPs Jens Landrie and Martin Bron broke out on the floor of Parliament. MPs present at the fateful debate described chaos as Bron, MP for Seaport, accused Landrie, MP for Borgrund-Mikkelby, of lying about his parliamentary voting record. The two then exchanged words, with Bron calling Landrie a "bumbling bureaucrat" and describing his tenure as MP as "a waste of 2 years," after which the MPs then began to fight. Several other MPs were injured in attempting to separate the pair. PM Magdalene Borsch, who was present, condemned the incident in a press conference.

"I am deeply concerned about the events I have witnessed today. It is my duty, and my fellow MPs' duties, to uphold our democracy, and a key part of doing that is respect for others. The actions of these two MPs fall far short of that standard and I unconditionally condemn their conduct."

Speaker of the Parliament Patricia Stolling also condemned the incident.

"This is absolutely unacceptable behavior in a democratic institution. We must conduct ourselves with dignity, and even if we disagree with others we must have respectful and civil discourse. I must hope we will not repeat this."

Federal District Police (FDP) released a statement saying that they were investigating the fight, and that both MPs could face charges of grievous battery.

When asked for comment, the Social Democratic Party, which Landrie is a member of, stated that it is also investigating but did not have further details. The Civic Alliance, of which Bron is a member, said there will be major disciplinary action taken against Bron.
