In the far northeast is the many islands that make up the land of Vancouver Straits off the mainland. Most water off the north coast tends to freeze up from November to August. The capital city, Sakhalin-Kouver lay in the far south of the nation, right on the coast, with a metropolitan population of about 2,389,000. The rest of the country is sparsely populated with only about 5 other cities with a population over 100,000. The economy of Vancouver Straits is heavily based on natural resources with oil being a large export. Despite relatively strict environmental regulations, many of the oil reserves are in the process of being extracted. Many estimates expect that most oil will be extracted by 2050-2060. The technology sector also makes up a large portion of the GDP, with most of the country's tech companies based in the capital. The GDP per capita is about $86,500 Vans (Vancan Dollars). Tourism is also popular, mainly in the form of cruises to the many islands off the coast.
