  1. I never got into the Merit myself, though others asked me to at times.  But my recollection seems to mostly consist NPO and ADN players playing off each other in the Merit.  I didn't want to be a part of that.

That was later...The Meritocracy pre-dated Invader/Defender politics...  But it did devolve to NPO vs ADN...

The region was definitely more RP oriented...players role played as members of the government for their respective countries rather than as a single citizen of a region like you see in most Invader/Defender game play.  Made for a different sort of game play...we did have our own foray into Defending/Invading...we went to war with Atlantic in 2003...

Anyway, I highly doubt it will ever get resurrected.

  2. Should be able to...it was set to 0 which disables the users ability to edit their own titles...I've never been a fan of letting users change their own title, but it's been a TWP tradition since I've been around.

I've set it to a minimum of 5 posts and then you can edit your title, just FYI.

  3. I'd have to build it from the ground up...you might recall it never worked in the last version of the site...time is not something I've had alot of as of late.  I've been busy learning Coldfusion for work since the websites there that I have to support are all Coldfusion (for the record, not my choice! I'd switch them all to PHP in a heartbeat if I could).

I'll see what I can do but no promises.

  4. I think one of the things that made the Meritocracy such a working Democracy for a long time was the fact we had someone (me...not to toot my own horn or anything, because I do not want the Delegacy, just using it as an example) who held the top in game seat (admittedly, it was a Founder not a WA slot) without imposing his will on the players in the region...well...until the whole pebble's "reboot" but that was because we were in an activity lull much like what we have now...

Anyway, my point is, the only time Democracy really seem to do well in NationStates is when running the Government is left to the players of the region and the user holding the reins of the region (be that Founder, or WA Delegate) is leaving the region to run itself and just staying by to help should something happen like raiders trying to move in a remove the democratically elected government...hard to do and also hard to truely call it a Democracy as it's more of a Benevolent Dictatorship, but it's the closest you can come in NationStates without just role playing the hole thing and ignore the actual game....

  5. If you're using Ad-Blocker (little stopsign icon with ABP instead of Stop written on it) you can click the stop sign and select "Turn off for this site" which will allow ads on a site you want to support but continue to block them else where...

The only reason I don't necessarily always do that myself is I have a rule that blocks all those facebook and twitter APIs calls that try to track your surfing habits by putting on Like/Share buttons on every page... What can I say, I'm a Social Media Luddite at times.

  6. Nah, he's realistically trying to find ways to make the site self-sufficient without putting more ads up.  As cheap as Bandwidth is these days, hosting a particularly popular website like NS does cost a fair amount of money.

I don't blame him, I just don't intend to buy any of those (save maybe the ad free thingy...even though I already block all the ads using ad-blocker, just to show my support for the site.)

  7. Rangers aren't that bad on Gas compared to some.  It's for the summer...need something that can pull a tent trailer, and well...my Honda Civic Hatchback just isn't up to that task.

Plus I'll still have my Civic for day to day/work stuff...so my gas bill shouldn't go up too much.  Insurance...well...let's just say Insurance companies are evil.

  8. Are you uploading or are you just linking to your own/a public server?

EDIT: Just was checking the bug logs over at Invision and it looks like 3.4.1 has a few issues with the new javascript editor...  manually typing in the IMG tag seems to be returning errors.

Manually typing in IMG tags when in RTE mode can cause "Incorrect file extension"

So for the moment the solution apparently is to use the little button on the toolbar in the post editor...second row, 11th Icon.

  9. I've checked every setting I can find that involves images and I can see no reason you wouldn't be able to post a jpeg...could you share the URL with me, and if you have it, the error you get when you try to post jpeg/jpg files to the post.  Also, are you just linking to an external server, or are you trying to upload the images?

  10. You fed them data bits... actually most of the time (not always) but when you see really high guest counts like that you can expect a good portion of them to be SPAM bots trying to register on the forums so they can hock their wares/pills/crap.

For example, in January (Up until 8am Mountain Time (GMT-7) Tues, Jan 8th) one of my antispam plugins has already stopped 268 Bots from registering, I've banned at least 4 or 5 that got through the gates, and the built in board spam protection may have stopped some as well (it doesn't seem to keep stats).

November, which I think we were up and running for 2 weeks....694 Spammers blocked... December is missing for some reason, but if you look at the total of spammers blocked on the front page (2814Spammers Stopped as of this reading) that means that December had 1852 Spammers blocked....
