  1. Société Métallurgique Pavus [SMP] Industry: Manufacturing Country: Nouveauterra SMP is a developer, manufacturer, rental manager, and servicer of industrial tools and systems, headquartered in Pavus, Mare de Sang. The company formed in 1325, and reformed in 1371 with the acquisition of a few smaller manufacturers. The tools in their itinerary include vacuum machines, air compressors, air pumps, automotive manufacturing tools, heavy metal presses, and metal forging equipment. A few brands under SMP management include: Hector which makes specialty drills and stamps, Montvert which services and produces metal testing equipment, and Feu heavy and super-heavy metal presses. Its latest area of expansion is in creating overhaul packages for its current customer base, so that customers of their products can buy a full array of machines and tools which can meld seamlessly into current production processes. SMP’s current CEO Marcus Darrien of 4 years has emphasized longevity in product lifespans.
  2. Société Électrique Rex [Rex Electric in Common] Industry: Energy Country: Nouveauterra Rex Électrique is the largest energy company by customer base in Nouveauterra, and the second largest member of the Système Énergétique National. Rex Électrique formed in 1301, and has provided electricity and natural gas to the nation’s capital Pointe-d’Espoir, as well as many communities around the capital ever since. 4. Speaker Series Day 2 The Future of Artificial Limbs and Organs Moderator: Vivienne Basseterre, Co-Chair of the Committee of the Expositioners Key Points “So many things can happen to us, and yet we’ll still be alive,” Vivienne Basseterre said. “However, in some cases we’re left irreparably changed. Engineers and chemists are working on this very problem, to make losing a limb, an organ, or even parts of our entire body not as impactful as it has been for most of human history.” “Artificial aids have come in many forms,” said Asuda Yeun, a medical doctor and engineer from Sekiya. “Cochlear implants, prosthetic noses, running blades, and many more. This latest generation looks to essentially rebuild the wheel, not replace it. Much of this has been powered by advances in stem cell and DNA manipulation technology.” “We’re achieving now what we’ve only been able to dream of before,” Roland Fisk said. He is a practitioner-researcher at a medical hospital in Fujai. “Actual restoration. Although some of our first steps are small, we’ve been able to attach small grafts of skin grown from stem cells, with no rejection. Successfully scaling to larger limbs and more complex organs can lessen or almost undo the impacts of major life saving surgeries, or injuries.” “These advances have serious implications,” Olívia Fernandes said. She is a bioethicist from Ryxtylopia. “Any gift poorly used can be a torture. The same good governance, humane payment and financing practices, as well as bodily rights practices must apply to these the same as mechanical heart valves, gastric sleeves, or artificial ball joints. In certain cases of full regeneration, the line between what’s considered a ‘pre-existing condition’ and a side effect of medicine has to be clearly distinguished in order to avoid unnecessary harm to people.” “Medicine is a practice built on trust and expertise,” Vivienne Basseterre said. “People will only trust medicine when it does good, both for the person and for the society at large. And medical abuses, like grave robbing, forced experimentation, and financial abuse aren’t as far back as people think. Technology as powerful as regrowing limbs will require trust and expertise an order of magnitude greater than I think any of us have seen before.”
  5. Société Chimique d'Août [Août or August in Common] Industry: Chemical Country: Nouveauterra Société Chimique d'Août is the leading chemical manufacturer in Nouveauterra. It has produced many different kinds and formulations of fertilizers since 1308. These include complex formulas, and simple phosphate fertilizers. 8. Speaker Series Day 1 Automation and Logistics Moderator: Alan Villers, Chair of the Committee of the Expositioners Key Points “The robots are here to stay,” said Alan Villers. He started the night listing many industries where semi-autonomous machines are already operating: “Vehicle manufacturing, food delivery, customer service, even some search and rescue. Industry leaders and entrepreneurs have found innovative ways to integrate autonomous machines into the business cycle. Now we have to contend with what automation will mean for the backbone of the economy, logistics.” “Logistics can be broad, and that is what is making it such a touchstone for people,” said Carla Montecarlo, a researcher from Fuentana. “This means longshoremen unloading and loading cargo ships, people who drive and drop packages off at your doorstep, warehouse stockers. There are millions of jobs in this industry which may be massively affected by implementing autonomous machines.” “There’s incredible opportunity for increased efficiency,” said Shigeru Mite, an entrepreneur from Min-su. “Some of the most dangerous logistical work can be handled by machines, who can be more easily repaired or replaced. And jobs that would seriously hurt workers overtime, like small item sorting causing tennis elbow, can be made safer with a semi-autonomous machine supervised by a human. Just from the number of truckers who lose their lives to tiredness while on the road should show what good we can do.” “That does come with some drawbacks right?” said Bruce Hastings, a podcaster and labor author from Hertfordshire and Jammbo. “These are millions of people who might be pushed by industry to reach machine-like efficiency. Other people have tried that before with serious negative health consequences. If workers are replaced outright, that’s millions of workers whose economies will have to either absorb them, subsidize them in some way, or allow them to fall by the wayside. “Although it’s hard to come to one concrete answer, I can say this,” said Alan Villers. “Many industries have had automation in some fashion or another, and for the most part they’ve been better for it, ever since the letter sorter machines of the 1330s. If mankind has been able to integrate machines with good overall results before, then there’s a chance lightning can hit the same place again.”
  9. Société d'Avions Agentum [SAAG in Common] Industry: Vehicles Country: Nouveauterra SAAG is a major military manufacturer in Nouveauterra, based in the city of Agentum. It is a government with three distinctive and differently empowered sections. This includes La Bureau du Président as the executive section, Le Grande Assemblée des États Continentaux (simply referred to as Le Grande Assemblée) as the legislative section, and La Tribunal Suprême as the judicial section. Le Bureau du Président is the chief executive body of government, and holds the head of state, the President. Besides being the representative government figure for the country to the world, the President also has a wide range of executive powers. The President: proposes the national budget. They nominate supreme judges, and departmental judges, consulates, special officers, armed forces leaders, and the prime minister. They also approve nominated ministers, bills, and laws. Lastly, they are the supreme commander of the armed forces during wartime. The President can do a number of different special procedures, like initiating a military intervention, but this requires a vote by Le Grande Assemblee. Le Grande Assemblée is a bicameral legislative body which holds the majority of law, treaty, taxation, warfighting, trading, and regulation authority in the nation. The first part, the Lower Assembly, is composed of many burgesses, with one representative for every 100,000 citizens, apportioned based on electoral districts proportionally spread throughout the nation. To date, 100 burgesses perform duties in the Lower Assembly. The second part, the Upper Assembly, is composed of two councilors for every state in the commonwealth. Currently 60 councilors perform duties in the Upper Assembly, with 36 of the councilors being representatives of island states in the nation. Bills, laws, and budgets must originate in the Lower Assembly, then pass through voting to the Upper Assembly, receive the necessary votes, then finally be forwarded to the Bureau du Président for signing. Le Grande Assemblée also holds the Office of the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is nominated by the President, and must be confirmed by the Upper Assembly by majority vote. Their main role is as the head of government. They facilitate discussion, votes, and committee assignments. They also control the Office of the Baculus, which is the main law enforcement body within Le Grande Assemblée, offering protection to the premises and the people inside. The Prime Minister can sometimes be assigned to head special projects, and carry the full weight and authority of the Presidency if such power is dispensed by the President. La Tribunal Suprême is a system of three courts. Regnum Court, which oversees federal criminal cases and initial appeals for regnus, or regions. A departmental court, which oversees appeals from different conjoined sections of regnus. And a supreme court, which oversees appeals which reach it from a departmental court, or from a state supreme court. The nation has a number of political structures, tied together by tiers of increasing authority. These chains of authority are Local, Regional, and Federal. Here is a diagram to show these structures: Chains of Authority within Nouveauterra Local Regional Federal Largest ^ | Smallest Canton Regnum Nation Ville Bergun Department Commune Canton Regnum Definitions: Commune - A grouping of at least 10 able-bodied people in an agreed upon area of habitation for the accomplishing of common goals and mutual support. There's no set rule for how a commune is meant to operate, only that it's a mutual agreement between contiguous land-owning parties. Ville - A grouping of at least 100 able-bodied people in an agreed upon area of habitation for the accomplishing of common goals and mutual support. Leadership must be chosen by a majority of inhabitants in the ville. Executive and legislative power can be concentrated in a chef or mayor, or it can dispersed in a elected council, or a further dispersed direct democracy through civil participation. Canton - A title granted by a Regius, consisting of a grouping of at least 1000 able-bodied people in an agreed upon area of habitation for the accomplishing of common goals and mutual support. Leadership must be chosen by a majority of inhabitants of the canton. Executive and legislative functions of government must be separated, with representation per every 100 voting age persons within the canton. Executive power can be concentrated in a chef or mayor, or it can dispersed in a elected council. Bergun - A designated legal subdivision of a regnum, with the express purpose of organizing funds, law, and federal representation. Created by decree through a regius, and alterable through referendum, it must contain at minimum 100,000 able-bodied people. One berges is selected by popular vote and goes to Le Grande Assemblée to represent the bergun. Regnum - A legally recognized state within the federal system of the republic. Recognized through a referendum of at minimum 100,000 able-bodied people, or by an act of Le Grande Assemblée, and ratified by the President. The executive (regius) is selected by a majority of the regnal inhabitants. It has distinct executive, legislative, and judicial divisions of authority. Legislative representation can be formed in terms of direct democracy with a selected administrator to organize proceedings, or representative democracy where a leader of the legislature is selected by their peers for a limited term. Department - A grouping of legally recognized states for the purposes of organizing federal activities, such as law enforcement, disaster relief, taxation, funding through grants, and national defense. Nation - The nation as a whole, including all constituent parts and administered holdings. Elections are held on the first Monday of October every two years. It is considered supra scrutinium, meaning anyone can cancel a legal obligation, or work obligation, in order to vote. Many different offices of the land fall on one of four term lengths; two, four, six, and eight years. Here is a list of some offices that fall into these categories: 8 6 4 2 Court Justices (2 term max) Vigil (sheriffs) (Unlimited) Administrators (canton) (2 terms max) Presidents (2 terms max) Councilors (Unlimited) Regius (2 terms max) Chefs and Mayors (Unlimited) Prime Ministers (Unlimited) Berges (Unlimited) Special officers or appointments often come with strict term limits, and service times. In some cases, a superseding authority can appoint an individual to fulfill an office role caused by a vacancy for the duration of the term until a newly elected person is placed in the office. 18. The Average Farmer Is 56 Years Old. How Will This Affect Nouveauterra? Lucio Justinus 02/02/1424 Floriville, Marteau - Velox Duboc and his son Joyeux are inspecting a field of bec-d’or plants. The plants aren’t fruiting, but mites and other critters like to gnaw on the plants all the way to the stump. Spotting them early usually leads to a better harvest. “It takes time but it’s worth the effort,” Velox says. “You only learn that with age. But I’m trying to teach this guy so he doesn’t make the same mistakes.” He pats his son Joyeux on the back. Velox and Joyeux Duboc, standing in their field When I asked Velox how tough farming is, his reply was straight to the point. “Do not plant a seed into the ground unless you are prepared to suffer for it.” Velox is turning 56 this year. He will be the average age of a farmer in Nouveauterra. The struggles he faces are felt by many in the country, and the government’s efforts to combat this manpower catastrophe has ramifications for the country, and potentially the world. Nouveauterra has farming areas in the Southern Belt and the northern tier. The federal government has monitored the health of these farms closely because of their relatively small size, and the fragility of certain micro-climates. Le Ministère de Development performs surveys of federally registered farms, and pulls census data to make policy and draw conclusions. The average age of a Nouveauterran farmer is 56 years old according to the MdD. Incorporated farms, according to the MdD, have also seen drops in participation, even by authorized foreign laborers. And those laborers are getting older too. The MdD puts out some theories as to why this is so. Many farms are family owned, and as children grow up, most do not come back to be a farmer like their parents. Only 31% come back. Some farms fall into abandonment, or are reclaimed by their local ville or canton. Farming is also labor intensive, and other hard labor jobs like construction, manufacturing, and resource extraction have also seen lower participation by young people. Young people have gravitated into soft-skill jobs, or white collar work more than hard labor fields. Velox’s 20-year-old son Joyeux talked about growing up as a farmer’s son. “My friends in the army made fun of me sometimes. Things like my first girlfriend being a goat, or how I smell like ass all the time, but I know it's good fun. When I tell them more about farming, a few seem to like it, but they definitely notice the scars.” Joyeux showed me his hands and his arms. They had many scars, from machines, dagger-grass, and animals on the farm. Small lines of paler skin on his tanned body. He also showed me a false molar in the back of his jaw, with the original loss caused by a run in with a tractor arm. Velox has a few of his own scars too, including a pinky that’s a bit shorter than the other. Velox has two sons and one daughter. His other son Claude moved away to work in chemical engineering in Agentum. His daughter Julie works as a nurse in Porta Marius. Joyeux is the only one to stay, and the only one interested in inheriting the farmstead when Velox passes on. So Velox teaches Joyeux everything he knows, including finance. The one overlooked reason for the loss of farmers is money. Owning a farm is expensive, whether it is feed, seeds, animals, construction, or hiring extra hands to work. The average farmer has made less and less money back from what they’ve invested over the last 50 years. This is from the new industrialized nature of many farms, and farming giants selling products at higher prices, with more stringent contracts. Velox tries to teach Joyeux to be more like a businessman. “Bec-d’Or is too weak for modification,” Velox said. “But people pay a great deal just for one. I make good money this way, and I teach him in just the same way. Checking what staple and boutique food prices look like, and what they will look like in the future. Rotating crops with me. It is hard, but it’s doable. He has made some good calls already.” Good calls like planting Sein-du-Champ, which became a hot drink additive for some time until the trend began fading out. Now it is Bec-d’Or, a fruit popular in summer drinks and refined spirits for its light taste. The Duboc’s grow staple crops, but always keep a field open for more boutique plants that grow well in their area. The federal government has tried to offset some of the challenges with different programs. New farmer grant and subsidies, direct assistance, as well as training courses at institutions like École d'Agriculture et du Foncier, and Institut Technique Général de Naen. For all these efforts, the crunch for farmers and farm workers is still there. If current trends hold, this pattern will only get worse with time until there’s a labor crisis. What do Velox and Joyeux think of it? “The system gets out what they put into the process,” Velox said. “Exclusive seed, automatons, unaffordable machines in. Cheap food, profits, and robbed people out. I don’t blame the youth for not tilling the field. They stand to suffer the most.” “I want to do what my dad does,” Joyeux said. “I love farming, and the pride I feel watching my blue beets or trumpet onions go on someone’s dinner plate. It isn’t easy, but I feel good after everything I do, even if the money is tight.” “Wait until you have a child and a truck,” Velox said with a laugh. The father and son laugh together as they go down the long field. The future for them and Nouveauterra is uncertain, but the clouds on the horizon are dark with rolls of thunder.
  19. The Southern Belt is characterized by three main climatic and topographic areas. The Southern Belt’s northernmost areas are characterized by semi arid mountains and highlands. These wind and rain eroded areas don’t retain much water, but trap moisture from the tropical easterlies, which contributes to the climate areas further south of it. Small birds and mammals inhabit the area. The central area of the Southern Belt, or La Boucle, is characterized by subtropical grasslands, with rich soil and persistent rainfall throughout the year. Areas with this kind of climate are also high in altitude, leading to the presence of some migratory birds from similar altitude ranges appearing from nearby regions. The southernmost areas of the Southern Belt are characterized by very dense forests, with lots of rain and moisture coming from easterly winds, and tributary rivers feeding the area. Much of this space has dense urban development, but some areas like the Olivier National Preserve pictured here, retain some of the old vegetation and wildlife. L’Immensité is just as its name suggests. The heart of the country is characterized by a large area with the same mostly arid desert. Few plants, animals, or people call this place home because of its poor soil and even poorer rainfall retention. It is however known for its large natural salt deposits. The Northern Tier is characterized by two main climatic and topographic areas. Terre de Braconnier is an area of highland and lowland with limited shrub growth and wildlife, as the great mountain ranges nearby retain some water. A few people and animals call this place home, mostly because of its seclusion. Le Bonneterre encompasses the northernmost areas of the country.
