The 1421 edition of the Giovannilandian Chess Championship has started today! It's one of the largest and most famous tournaments in the entire country, with thousands of fans coming every year. The tournament is taking place in Sonserina, a city in the Akallia Region that is also the national capital of chess.

In the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Amore Gile-Abrente visited the tournament venue and gave a short statement: "I hope that the 1421 edition of our national Chess Championship can be as successful as the previous ones ever since 1294, when the tournament first started. Good luck to all the players, who have already proved their chess skills in regional competitions, and will certainly show them again in the national championship! May the best chess player win, and may we hopefully see some rising chess talents. For Giovanniland!"

Following the Prime Minister's speech, each player showed up carrying a flag of their region as the crowd cheered for each of them. Finally, in the last major event of the day, the groups for the championship's group stage were announced. The 36 players were drawn into six groups of six, by selecting one player from the six ranked pots, to which players were allocated according to their rankings: 1st-6th best into the first pot, 7th-12th into the second, and so on. The groups are listed in the table below, together with the schedule of matches. The schedule and brackets were also revealed and is shown after the table.

"So, here are the results from all the matches played yesterday and today!" said Vanessa. "I'll start talking about Group A, which was the only group to have all matches result in draws in Matchday 1. Gratia Frigiva-Lukio drew with Artorio de Silva, which was expected due to their similar ratings, however the lower-rated Gabriella Ambroso and Amanda Gilvano de Valle were some of the main upsets of the day as they managed to draw with the two Grandmasters of the group. In contrast, Group B was the only group to have no draws, and the matches there were mostly normal according to ratings, except for Lukia Aquilano-Severino defeating the higher rated Markia Allamore. Group C also had most of its matches go as expected, with two wins and one draw." Vanessa stopped for a bit and sipped a cup of coffee.

She continued: "However, if the three first groups went mostly as expected, the three last ones were full of upsets. In Group D, the defending champion Lavinia Pasquale-Arbone was only able to draw the untitled player Elvidio Violetto Prasino, while the other Grandmaster of the group besides Lavinia, Guillermo Uryde-Amorino, wasn't lucky either as they lost to lower-rated Amando Nevio-Karpo. In Group E, Grandmaster Severo Spindola Giordano's draw against CM Tommaso Koliva was also an upset, just like Grandmaster Giuliana Flaviano-Emina's draw against CM Tiberio Serano-Bruttia in Group F. Other matches went more as expected, and this marks the end of my comments about the matches."

Karlo Nakamura-Edrense then presented the rankings:

Karlo said: "In the rankings, to be honest, we can't really see much as it's only the first day—a player in first place in their group due to only one win could turn out to be last by the time the group stage ends. If someone doesn't remember how places are calculated, a win in a chess match gives one point, a draw gives half a point, and a loss gives none. The usual tiebreakers are higher number of wins, lower number of losses, head-to-head score and finally ELO rating. Because we're on the first matchday and all the first three tiebreakers still result in a tie, players are listed by higher rating. Anyways, that is all for today! The players will now rest for a day and then play their next matches on June 20th and 21st, which means our next Chess Report will be in three days. Stay tuned!"

Vanessa started presenting the results: "Eighteen matches were played yesterday, just like on the first matchday, in which the competitors played two matches between each other in order to even out the results, and then the results added up to earn the final score, two wins or one win and one draw lead to 1-0 for the better player, while two draws or one win for each lead to a 1/2-1/2 points draw. Group A was able to get past its drawish first matchday with two wins and one draw today, going as expected according to chess ratings. In this group, all players still have good chances since the first matchday was solely composed of draws. However, Group B was more interesting, with a big upset in the match between Grandmaster Sergio Amorante-Aquilano and Candidate Master Lorentia Gavione that resulted in a draw. This means that Lorentia and Vanessa Gravanda-Edrense—who drew against Lukia Aquilano-Severino—were able to recover from the previous day's loss. However, Markia Allamore, who lost against the youngest tournament member Gustavo Takeda, is now in jeopardy and must earn good results in the next few matches if they want to have a chance at winning the Championship."

She continued: "Group C had two draws and one win, the win happening on the match between Grandmaster Karlo Neurine-Sousa and Vittore Urbano-Allamore for the former. This means that Vittore has lost twice in a row and is not in a good position, but all other members of the group are more or less fine. A similar situation happens in Group D with Flavia Altokastro, who lost another match, in a group that was the only one of the day to not have any draws. Group D also saw the rebounding of the defending champion Lavinia Pasquale-Arbone, who won yesterday after an upset in Matchday 1 that resulted in her drawing her lower-rated opponent. Meanwhile, Group E was similar to Matchday 1's Group A, having all of its three matches resulting in a draw, including two upsets in which Grandmasters Giovanni Amdo-Gyatso and Severo Spindola Giordano drew against their opponents. Finally, Group F featured a match between two of the tournament's under-20 members, Giuliana Flaviano-Emina and Aurelio Vindemia Orfeo, which resulted in a draw. Other matches in that group went as expected, with now twice-defeated Sebastiana Glendora in jeopardy of being eliminated if they don't have good results in the next matches."

Karlo then presented the rankings "In the previous Chess Report I said we couldn't really see much as it was only the first day. Now, with two matchdays finished, the bigger picture begins to unfold, and we can already see who is on the route of advancing to the knockout phase, and who could possibly be eliminated. Still, it's too early to tell for sure, there are still three matchdays left. Anyways, the players will now rest for a day and then play their next matches on June 23st and 24nd, which means our Chess Report has ended and the next one will be in three days. Stay tuned for more news about the Giovannilandian Chess Championship!"

Vanessa started commenting on the results: "Matchday 3 saw a higher amount of wins and a lower amount of draws compared to the previous two matchdays. No group had its matches only result in draws, while Groups B and D did have all of their matches result in wins for either side. Starting with Group F—this group saw two wins and one draw, which went fairly as expected if we take a look at ratings, with the two grandmasters reaffirming their strong position in the group by winning their matches. However, Group E saw some upsets today, such as the draw between Grandmaster Severo Spindola Giordano and Felige Numeriana-Velio, with a difference of 400 points between their ratings. Furthermore, still in the same group, the lower-rated Tommaso Koliva was able to defeat Filippo Ottaviano. Going on to Group E, this was one of the two groups to not have any draws as I said earlier. Matches went mostly as predicted, except for the upset when Amando Nevio-Karpo defeated the higher-rated Gepelle Gormo-Pasano."

She stopped for a while and then continued: "Meanwhile, Group C was also full of upsets today just like Group E. Both grandmasters of the group, Karlo Neurine-Sousa and Giulietta Quintana-Altada, were not able to win against their lower-rated opponents, instead only managing to draw. Finally, Group A saw a match called by some as the biggest upset of the tournament so far—Grandmaster Gianna Superbo-Legia's defeat against Candidate Master Artorio de Silva, with a difference of 248 points, beating the previously biggest upset. Today's match was surprising because Gianna could not win in either game that composes a tournament match, meaning that she lost both with white and black pieces. Finally, all matches in Group B went as expected, so there's not really much to comment. My colleague will now present the updated rankings!"

Karlo started speaking as the rankings appeared in the screen: "One more matchday has passed, and we can see the bigger picture unfolding! Reminding everyone, in this Giovannilandian Chess Championship the top two of each group and the four best 3rd-placed players advance to the knock-out stage. In Group A, the four top players seem still capable of entering the knockout phase if things go well for them, but Amanda Gilvano de Valle and Gabriella Ambroso are trailing behind and must fight back if they want to advance. As for Group B, Gustavo Takeda has built a clear lead and has almost surely guaranteed a spot in the next phase, but not much can be said for the rest, as only one point separates the 3rd player from the last."

He sipped a cup of coffee before continuing: "In Group C we can see five of the six players still aiming for the coveted spots, but Vittore Urbano-Allamore has been all but eliminated, not even able to fight for a 3rd place spot, because the currently 3rd-placed player Gioseppa Saliflumo has a better win rate. The same can be said for Sebastiana Glendora and Candidate Master Flavia Altokastro in Groups F and D respectively, groups in which the other players have close point differences and still have fair chances. Finally, for Group E, it seems that every player could still qualify, although some must hope that their possible 3rd-place ranking is better than in other groups. This happens due to the highest rate of drawn matches out of any group of the tournament, only three out of nine matches haven't resulted in draws. But that's all for today, our chess players will play the Matchday 4 during the weekend so stay tuned for the next report edition after that!"

Vanessa started commenting on the results: "Considering I said Matchday 3 had a lower amount of draws, I'll have to correct myself now, because Matchday 4 beat its predecessor with a total of only three draws on all 18 matches. Group A was probably the only group that went totally as expected if we look at ELO ratings. In this group, Grandmaster Gianna Superbo-Legia was able to recover after last matchday's upset, while former group leader Candidate Master Artorio de Silva did not hold on to their position as they lost to Grandmaster Antonio Ambrosio Borba. Meanwhile, Group C had some upsets, as neither grandmaster in this group could defeat their lower-ranked opponent, something that also happened in Group E, in which Grandmaster Giovanni Amdo-Gyatso drew with International Master Filippo Ottaviano. Otherwise, the other matches of these groups also went as expected."

"However, the upsets I mentioned above were nowhere close to what happened in Groups B, D and F, in which all top-ranked grandmasters of these groups lost to their lower-ranked opponents—Grandmasters Sergio Amorante-Aquilano, Lavinia Pasquale-Arbone, and Raffella Quadrigaro lost to International Masters Markia Allamore, Gepelle Gormo-Pasano and Aurelio Vindemia Orfeo respectively. This comes off as a surprising upset for many chess commenters and viewers, since it includes a former champion and the current defending one. Furthermore, these groups also featured Candidate Masters Lorentia Gavione and Tiberio Serano-Bruttia losing to lower-ranked Vanessa Gravanda-Edrense and Sebastiana Glendora respectively."

Color key:

 Color Meaning
Player has guaranteed qualification to knockout phase
Player achieves at least 3rd place; can be eliminated if doesn't finish among the four best 3rd-placed
Player still in the fight for the qualification; can be eliminated if finishes outside top 3 of their group
  Player already eliminated from advancing

Karlo began: "Here are the rankings after Matchday 4! You will notice they have some special colors, whose meanings can be seen in the color key above, indicating the status of players regarding qualification to the knockout phase. We'll start talking about Group B, which features the only player that has completely avoided elimination, Grandmaster Gustavo Takeda, who is also the only to have won every single match so far. Grandmaster Sergio Amorante-Aquilano from the same group is also in a good place, but should aim to win the upcoming match against Gustavo if they don't want to be relegated to 3rd place and rely on other 3rd-placed in the case International Master Markia Allamore wins their last match. Group B is also the only group to have only one already eliminated player, as 4th place Lukia Aquilano-Severino and 5th place Vanessa Gravanda-Edrense are still in the fight to achieve one of the four best 3rd place spots."

He sips some tea before speaking to the viewers again: "Moving on, we have Groups A and C, which all have the same amount of players in each category: one guaranteed to have at least 3rd place, three still in the fight for qualification, and two eliminated. Group D has a similar distribution, with defending champion Lavinia Pasquale-Arbone notably at the risk of being eliminated. Finally, Groups E and F have the exact same rankings by points, but some differences in the distribution of wins, draws, and losses, which means they have a different number of players in each category. Group E has three players with guaranteed 3rd place at the least, and the other three already eliminated."

"This is due to the fact that, if 3rd place Severo Spindola Giordano loses and 4th place Filippo Ottaviano wins, they would have the exact same statistics and then Severo would win due to a higher ELO rating," Karlo explains. "But that is not true for Group E, if the same happens with 3rd place Aurelio Vindemia Orfeo and 4th place Pietro Maldonato-Violetto, Pietro would knock Aurelio out of the top 3 due to a higher amount of wins. That's all for today, stay tuned for the Matchday 5 during June 29th and 30th, including the interesting matches between the two Grandmasters of each group!"

Vanessa talked as the results appeared on the screen: "Look what do we have here! There isn't a nicer way to ending the group stage other than not only matches between the grandmasters of each group, but also lots of interesting results and upsets. Groups A, B and D had the interesting matches for this mathcday, such as the lower-ranked grandmasters defeating the higher-ranked ones. This includes Grandmaster Gustavo Takeda who defeated Grandmaster Sergio Amorante-Aquilano and continued his win streak that encompasses all of the tournament so far. Perhaps more eye-catching, though, was the fact that defending champion Grandmaster Lavinia Pasquale-Arbone lost to Grandmaster Guillermo Uryde-Amorino, meaning that Lavinia has now lost twice in a row and has been... eliminated from the tournament! You will see more about that right now, when my colleague Karlo presents the rankings and qualified players.

Karlo started presenting the rankings: "Here are the final group stage results! Sixteen players have qualified, of which nine are Grandmasters (out of 12 in the competition), three are International Masters (out of seven), two are Candidate Masters (out of eight), and the other two are players with no title (out of nine). Some unexpected results were, for example, Amanda Gilvano de Valle recovering from early lost matches in Group A and ending up advancing instead of Grandmaster Gianna Superbo-Legia. For Group B, it is worth noting that the first place, Grandmaster Gustavo Takeda, has double the points of the second place, Grandmaster Sergio Amorante-Aquilano, cementing his achievement of being the only player in the tournament to not have drawn or lost any matches. Funnily enough, Sergio barely made it in due to having a higher rating than 3rd placed Vanessa Gravanda-Edrensewho then also missed qualifying by having a good third place finish due to a lower rating."

"Moving on to Groups C and D, these groups have a similarity in the fact that both of their top players each have the exact same points stats with the respective runners-up. Group D is also worth mentioning due to the fact Vanessa already mentioned, the elimination of the defending champion after two upsets. It's something we haven't seen in a while!", he exclaimed and then continued speaking. "Finally, we will also take a look at the comparison of third-place finishes of each group—it was pretty close, with number of wins and even ELO rating serving as tiebreaks. After this, I present the long-awaited knockout stage brackets!"

1421ChessR16.thumb.png.3f51e6e4d5b1114e9e53c0d9b26852e3.png

"Here we can see each side of the bracket. One side looks a tad stronger, with five Grandmasters, two International Masters, and one Candidate Master, while the other contains one less Grandmaster and one less International Master, with those places being filled by the two players with no title that qualified for this stage. There are several matches between grandmasters, as well as some other matches with a stronger side if we go by rating, but with an unclear result given that some of the lower-ranked qualified players have successfully pulled upsets in the group stage. Watch these matches on the July 2nd and 3rd, and stay tuned for another Chess Report in three days!"

Vanessa then commented the results: "Firstly, I'll explain the way the overall knockout stage works. So, unlike in the group stage where only two games happened in each match, the round of 16 had four games for each match—and in the upcoming quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals it will only increase, with 6, 8 and 10 respectively. The number of games is always even so players can have equal chances by playing with the white and black pieces. These four games are of the classical variety, taking longer to be finished. However, if the total of points reached by both players is equal, the players then break the tie by playing rapid games, which have a faster time control. Two of these games happen, unless the players also draw, then more rapid games are played until one wins. If one of the players reaches a total of points that is impossible for the other to overcome in the four main games, the remaining ones will not be played, and that is why you see some scores whose total points result in 3 and not 4 if added together."

She sipped a cup of coffee before continuing: "Four matches happened in each side of the bracket and were all equally interesting. In the first match, Grandmasters Karlo Neurine-Sousa and Antonio Ambrosio Borba won two games each and went to a tiebreak, in which Karlo won one rapid game and the other was drawn, thus giving the quarter-finals spot to Karlo. The second match was played between Grandmaster Giovanni Amdo-Gyamtso and Candidate Master Artorio de Silva, with Giovanni winning two games and the other was drawn. Moving on, we had another duel of Grandmasters, this time Sergio Amorante-Aquilano and Guillermo Uryde-Amorino. In a surprising upset, Guillermo was able to eliminate Sergio from the competition after an initial draw and a fierce tiebreaker, whose two rapid games were won by Guillermo, even though he had a disadvantage 160 ELO points. To close off the first side of the bracket, there was a match between International Masters Aurelio Vindemia Orfeo and Gepelle Gormo-Pasano, with the latter winning three games and drawing the other one."

"That's not all, though! There's also the other side of the bracket, and its first match was played between International Master Gioseppa Saliflumo and Amanda Gilvano de Valle. This was another upset from today's matches, with three draws at first, and only in the last game was Amanda able to win against Gioseppa and thus earn a quarter-finals spot. She will meet the winner of the other match that resulted in a upset today, Grandmaster Giuliana Flaviano-Emina versus Candidate Master Tommaso Koliva, in which the latter won a closely-fought tiebreaker despite having nearly 300 less ELO points. But if the two first matches of this side of the bracket were pretty close, the two others were pretty far from it. Grandmasters Gustavo Takeda and Raffella Quadrigaro both decisively won against their opponents Amando Nevio-Karpo and Grandmaster Giulietta Quintana-Altada respectively."

1421ChessQF.thumb.png.a2fa96f1540340f4fb68a3adbdaf41db.png

Karlo was then given the floor: "And now we can see the bracket in full, with the names of the eight players that advanced to the quarter-finals! Five out of nine Grandmasters advanced, while the other three were all equally divided into the remaining categories. In the bracket we can see some interesting matches, for example the upcoming duel of Grandmasters between Gustavo Takeda and Raffella Quadrigaro—the player with an uninterrupted win streak of six matches so far, and the player with the highest ELO rating not only of the tournament but also of Giovanniland as a whole. Another interesting match will be Amanda Gilvano de Valle versus Candidate Master Tommaso Koliva, which will ensure that at least one non-Grandmaster appears in the semifinals. Be sure to watch the quarter-finals matches on the July 5th and 6th, and stay tuned for another Chess Report in three days!"

"Hey there Giovanniland, and welcome to the latest edition of the Giovannilandian Chess Report! I am your main host Vanessa Desniana, and here is my colleague Karlo Nakamura-Edrense that presents this report together with me. We'll continue to present information about the Giovannilandian Chess Championship until it finishes—and today we have interesting information about the quarterfinals."

GM Raffella Quadrigaro, 2787
3 (6) - 3 (5)
GM Gustavo Takeda, 2601

Vanessa: "Here are the results of the four matches played as part of the quarterfinals! As we can see, the number of games per match increases as the tournament progresses—round of 16 had four, quarterfinals had six, semifinals will have eight, and the grand finals and 3rd place match will have ten. These are classical style games which take longer, but if a draw happens the players switch to rapid game tiebreakers, which are initially two but may need as many as possible until the tie is broken."

She continued: "In the first side of the bracket, three Grandmasters and one International Masters played their matches. Grandmasters Giovanni Amdo-Gyatso and Karlo Neurine-Sousa played a close match, which was expected given that they only have a difference of three ELO points in their rating. Giovanni initially won one game and drew other three, but Karlo then turned the tables and won the two final games to achieve a spot on the semifinals. The other match was played between Grandmaster Guillermo Uryde-Amorino and International Master Gepelle Gormo-Pasano. Guillermo easily won, drawing the two initial games and then winning all others."

The screen then switched to the other results. "In the second side of the bracket, both matches needed tiebreaker matches. The match between Candidate Master Tommaso Koliva and Amanda Gilvano de Valle had three wins for each side saw an upset by Amanda after she won the two rapid games. Therefore, Amanda is the only non-Grandmaster player remaining in the tournament. Meanwhile, a duel of Grandmasters happened between Raffella Quadrigaro and Gustavo Takeda, closely watched by thousands of spectators. In an unparalleled feat within this tournament so far, Raffella and Gustavo not only drew all six classical games, but also drew 10 rapid games before concluding the tiebreaker, despite a large difference in ELO rating. Raffella was able to win the eleventh rapid game and thus advance to the semifinals."

1421ChessSF.thumb.png.ffc53342ef0e2772e52d9dcf1c157574.png

Karlo then showed the updated bracket: "Four players have been eliminated in the quarterfinals, and four players remain! Here in the bracket we can easily see who has advanced and who will play with who. Let's compare the the title distribution of players between the quarterfinals and now. Firstly, three out of five Grandmasters advanced, which was the highest that could happen since two Grandmaster-only matches happened yesterday and today. However, the only one player with no title managed to stay, something that doesn't happen often. The semifinals will feature one duel of Grandmasters, namely between Karlo Neurine-Sousa and Guillermo Uryde-Amorino, while in the other side of the bracket Amanda Gilvano de Valle meets Raffella Quadrigaro. Stay tuned for these matches and our next report!

"Good afternoon to the viewers from Giovanniland and elsewhere! We are just starting our Chess Report that happens every three days, and today we will cover the results of the Giovannilandian Chess Championship's Semifinals. I am your host Vanessa Desniana and together with my colleague Karlo Nakamura-Edrense, I'll present the match results and brackets, as well as some highlights from the weekend."

  GM Karlo Neurine-Sousa, 2675
4 (1/2) - 4 (1 1/2)
GM Guillermo Uryde-Amorino, 2541

GM Raffella Quadrigaro, 2787
5 1/2 - 1/2

Amanda Gilvano de Valle, 2301

"Here are the results from the two the matches played yesterday and today!" said Vanessa. "We can see that they have pretty different results. On one side of the bracket, there was a duel of Grandmasters between Karlo Neurine-Sousa and Guillermo Uryde-Amorino. Like all semifinal matches in the Championship's recent history, they played eight classical games, four on each day. Karlo won the first two, followed by three draws, a point at which spectators said it was unlikely for Guillermo to come back. However, he managed to win the following game, draw the penultimate one, and win the last one, ending the eight games with four points for each. The rapid game tiebreakers resulted in a draw at first, but Guillermo also won the latter one and thus advanced to the finals.

She then commented on the other game: "In the other side of the bracket, a match between Grandmaster Raffella Quadrigaro and Amanda Gilvano de Valle was played, with a ELO rating difference of nearly 500 points. Therefore, it was unsurprising to see that Raffella easily won the match, drawing only one game and winning five others. The fact she snatched this early win meant that not all games needed to be played. Raffella then earned the other spot on the finals, while Amanda will play the 3rd place match."

1421ChessF.thumb.png.999ea19a0b6dc1bd34d596d902c513be.png

Karlo then talked about the updated bracket: "After the semifinals, we await for the last set of matches starting in two days. Two Grandmasters out of the three competing in the semifinals won their matches and thus earned a spot on the grand final. These two players are Guillermo Uryde-Amorino, a seventeen year old rising star in Giovannilandian chess that even managed to defeat the defending champion Lavinia Pasquale-Arbone during the group stage; and Raffella Quadrigaro, former champion and the player with the highest rating in this tournament."

"Meanwhile, on the battle for the 3rd place, Grandmaster Karlo Neurine-Sousa and Amanda Gilvano de Valle will have a chance to rebound from their semifinal losses, in a match that has a fair ELO rating advantage for Karlo, but still one worth seeing, given the fact that Amanda has achieved some upsets during this tournament. Both matches will contain 10 classical-style games and then rapid game tiebreakers if needed. I am sure you are all awaiting for these two last matches, so don't forget to watch them!"

GM Guillermo Uryde-Amorino, 2541

"Here are the results from the two matches played yesterday and today!" said Vanessa. "Firstly, I'll talk about the 3rd place match. In this match, Karlo Neurine-Sousa played against Amanda Gilvano de Valle, both coming from a loss in the semifinals. It was indeed a match worth watching, with a very close result—Amanda initially won two games, followed by one Karlo win and four draws. However, Karlo was able to turn the tables towards the end of the match, winning the last three games and thus earning 3rd place in the competition. This was a very good result for Amanda nevertheless, because she never got past the group stage in almost all championships she played—her best result before was a round of 16 finish in 1417. For Karlo, 3rd place was also his best result, as his debut in the 1420 tournament was ended by that year's champion Lavinia Pasquale-Arbone on the quarter finals."

"Meanwhile, the final was played between two Grandmasters. Raffella Quadrigaro had a higher rating and was regarded as the favorite to win the match, especially due to being a three times former champion. However, the other player Guillermo Uryde-Amorino defeated higher ranked players so his performance could not be underestimated. In a very close match, the ten classical games played resulted in three wins for each side, and four other draws, requiring rapid tiebreakers. After four draws, Guillermo was able to win the fifth rapid game, thus winning the match and the tournament. This was Guillermo's debut, and a very successful one, as no other champion in the tournament's history has won in the same year as their debutexcept, of course, for the winner of the 1st championship Taide Antenore-Verdi. On the other hand, Raffella wasn't able to add another championship wins to her tally that includes the 1405, 1413 and 1414 championships, with her 2nd place finish equalling the previous year, in which she lost to Lavinia.

Karlo then presented the final ranking of all players: "With the tournament coming to an end, we can finally present the final ranking! Firstly, it's worth noting some important details. For the players who advanced to the knockout stage, their wins, draws and losses on this part of the competition are also added to their record—and note that matches decided in tiebreakers are counted as draws. Therefore it was possible for some players to end the tournament undefeated, for example Gustavo Takeda, who lost his quarterfinal match against Raffella Quadrigaro after a close tiebreaker."

"Secondly, there were some interesting features of this ranking. One of them is the fact that the winner, Guillermo Uryde-Amorino, has half a point less than the runner-up Raffella Quadrigaro, due to their previous matches' results. The highest number of points was achieved by Raffella, with seven points, while the lowest goes to Candidate Master Flavia Altokastro, who did not win or draw any game. This is all for today and for our coverage of the 1421 Chess Championship; the leaderboard is publicly available for anyone who wants to search it to find out about more specific records."
