[Discussion] Commend Bran Astor

Recommended Posts

This discussion will be a little different. As the Hall of Nations transitions to a new purpose, I would like to start by encouraging greater participation in recording TWP history by writing Regional Commendations. Our Delegate, Dilber, has selected Bran Astor as the next player to be commended. I want to know why you think Bran should be commended. I have started a list of reasons (purposely vague). Please add to and expand upon this list.

  • delegate of TWP
  • guardian of TWP
  • TWP artist
    • updated the TWPirate theme for TWPAF

If everyone in the Hall of Nations could add or expand upon one thing, that would be amazing!

Draft 1:

Spoiler

The Region of The West Pacific,

Grateful for Bran Astor’s dedication to The West Pacific,

Awed their time spent in multiple leadership roles to better the region, serving as a three-time guardian, Minister of Internal Affairs, and as the 49th Delegate of this region from the Fall of 2019 to the Fall of 2020,

Memorializing their service as a three-time guardian for keeping The West Pacific safe and secure, removing troublemakers, spammers, and the likes, and acting as a creative consultant to the Delegate,

Extolling their guidance as Minister of Internal Affairs for establishing and serving as an admin for The West Pacific Roleplay server, organizing TWP’s first ever delegation to the NS Olympics, establishing TWP’s NS Gameplay Forum Embassy; leading the Festival of the Three Perfections, developing and producing Prom with Osiris, Dragons of the Frozen Seas, and Burning Marsupial, all successful interregional events; running regional events such as TWPride Month, the Casserole of Humanity, and OcTWPerfest; and for rejuvenating The West Pacifican (renamed The Western Post in 2020),

Amazed with their contributions to The West Pacific as its 49th Delegate, serving from 2019 to 2020, for establishing the University of The West Pacific, a program in which develops future leaders by teaching players about each part of The West Pacific’s government; organizing the Midwinter Shenanigans, a month long celebration of winter holidays; building on interregional relations by establishing treaties with Karma and The Pacific, along with guiding Balder through creating their own regional map, and hosting OWL-20, a space-themed festival with Osiris and Lazarus; showing support for all members of The West Pacific via his “Dad” telegram during Pride Month; and going above and beyond the gameplay requirements of being Delegate by focusing on the culture and roleplay community of The West Pacific,

Lauding their furthering of The West Pacific’s culture with The Coffee Dispatches, TWP’s Daily News, via the nation Coffee of the Day, as a source of in-game and out-of-game activities and news; Today in The West, a unique program designed to drive meaningful activity, share important and fun news, and invite all to participate in TWP, which has been going strong since April of 2018; and the inclusion of Haikuesday and Thank You Thursday in Today in the West,

Recognizing the quality and quantity of works of art created for various events, roleplay, and military purposes, including, but not limited to: Challenge Coins for regional activities such as The West Pacific World (Rugby) Cup, The Weird Pacific (Call of Lovecraft), Time Warp Pacific (Dammit Janet), and the Midwinter Shenanigans, and interregional events such as The Festival of the Three Perfections, Burning Marsupial, multiple Z-Day and N-Day events; roleplay maps for TWP (maintained since 2017), Lazarus, Gay, and Land of Kings and Emperor’s, The West Pacific Armed Forces military recruitment posters, re-designing the TWPirate theme (September 2020), and special mission patches; and numerous individual awards for Services to The West Pacific,

Noting their strong personality, always encouraging new ideas, a willingness to help out and take on additional leadership roles, and desire to see others do the best that they can,

And acknowledging the extraordinary amount of time and effort spent bettering the region,

Hereby Regionally Commends Bran Astor.

Obviously Bran needs to be commended. The last several years of TWP success owe some measure of gratitude to him, whether he helped in planning, inspired new ways of thinking, did the art for it, or any number of ways he always has a hand in helping out. Even things he doesn't like to do personally he still whole-heartedly supports. He tried raiding when I was Captain in TWPAF and didn't end up sticking around, but he always made sure he was available for me to bounce ideas off of, to create art for us, and to encourage other folks to join up. He's kept a very respectful balance between traditional TWP and trying new things - allowing us to build on our own culture without destroying the good things we already had going. He is very creative himself, obviously, and does art for literally everything we do, but he encourages creativity and thinking outside of the box from the rest of us too, which is what I really respect. TWP's treaty with Karma would be possible without Bran, but it would not be the special and honest thing that it is without him.

Bran is the best. :) Like I want to see a whole laundry list from you guys.

Bran has done a lot for TWP. Like Alti said he has encouraged creativity among members. He created the RP Map, the badges for regional events, and a lot of other regional art work. Bran also started the Today in the West morning announcements on the RMB from before he was delegate. But he has also done a lot in terms of relations with other regions like the Better Together treaty as well as the totally excellent treaty with Karma(like what Alti said).
I would add more but unfortunately I don't have much time to dig deeper into Bran's historic impact in TWP but I know that he has done so much more than what I have put.

Since I'm a sheltered TWP child and refuse to leave the safety of TWP unless its accompanied by belligerent Pirates I can only compare Bran to other TWP delegates and in doing so I can hole heartedly say Bran is definitely worthy a commendation. Here is some things I feel are commendable:

  • Going through what Alti and Zoran wrote one thing that really needs to be highlighted is the Art. There is so much of it just for TWP related events and the special challenge coins handed out for those events. That takes time to make, so just the amount of time it took to create all that art we probably take for granted should be commendable in itself.

  • Bran is one of the major factors of why I kept playing, probably not a commendable enough reason on its own but I feel he's a had the same effect on others.

  • From what I've seen, Bran Is always honest and decisive, maybe brutally honest to some and it drove others away but for me personally, It is one of his greatest traits, I always thought one day he would finally say something I wouldn't agree with but I can honestly say that I believe that I always ended up agreeing with his position on matters, and his actions were always beneficial to TWP in the long run.
    (EDIT: I don`t know if I conveyed what I mean here correctly, While yes the Delegate has supremacy and that is the law we all agree with, that does not make us yesmen. Had I ever disagreed with Bran I would of still accepted his judgment, his word was law, but I also would have messaged him my concerns on the matter and trust him enough to know we can have had a honest talk about it)

  • Bran is a great teacher, things he taught the inaugural class of UTWP still stick with me, Bran was able to get us to think about ways of expressing TWP culture in different mediums, taught that its important to think outside the box on how to make ideas happen. (He is also the reason my comics exist for the rest of TWP to see.)

  • Analysis Paralysis. This is a personal one but my post so whatever. I credit Bran with teaching me how to stop myself from over analyzing things I've created, I still do it, but now I also get someone to look over what I've done and bounce ideas back and forth. I guess that's what I can say he can be commend for, encouraging teamwork making sure you know there's more then just you.

I saw this earlier and thought I'd come back to it when it had more responses. I'm shocked there's still so few. Bran has accomplished so much for this region in the short time (relative to NS) that I've been around to witness it. I'll let others who were more involved during his term as delegate say more about his political achievements, but to me what will always stand out was the sheer amount of effort Bran put into TWP culture. When he was Minister of Cultural Affairs under Halo (the title might have been different then) he sort of single-handedly catalyzed many of the cultural traditions that we still know and love. Cultural events like 'Prom' with Osiris and other discord festivals began with him, and wouldn't have happened without him spearheading them. The Regional Guides and Today In The West were shaped by him. When he came into his own delegacy, his energy shifted from being mainly concentrated on cultural matters to having to orchestrate regional policy and activity on all issues. This meant less focus on the areas I was involved in with the Cultural Affairs ministry, but he was still the one who changed that into its current form as the Cultural Trust. Personally, I probably wouldn't have been involved in cultural affairs at all had it not been for Bran's mentorship.

I'm realizing as I write this that the above paragraph is maybe not super useful as a starting place for drafting a commendation, and is more just my fond reflections. I wasn't involved in as wide an array of activities as Bran was, so I probably can't name/remember as many good things to put in a commendation as some in his cabinet might. But for me his work with TWP culture should be at or near the top of the list (and probably should be a list itself... I won't pretend I remember how many of our traditions were started or revitalized by him, because the list always surprises me in a "wow! I forgot he did that too!" kind of way). I think a lot of the things in UTWP were his brainchildren (not to mention the program itself), maybe that would be a good place to start for a list.

Not sure i could really adding up to the commendation, since i only joined last September and i think few days after it or after N-day (i may mistaken in the exact date), bran is plan to stepped down. Because of Bran's foundation on TWP that make me stay. The only people that actually can speaks the goodwill of what Bran Astor has done is the people that recognize and affected by his ideas and merit in TWP (aka. Old people of TWP, sorry :D) in which led him to become The Guardian, Minister of Internal Affair(before it become Cultural Affair), and dearest Delegate of TWP.

based on my research (also called lurking around), there's a point that i consider a commendable. The idea of making a new generation of player for the future of TWP. Willing to teach on how to manage and organize. I saw it on archived RP in Discord(not sure whether it's admissible evidence). also UTWP are the great idea in NS sense of gameplay and TWP governing.

an idea: for further Regional Commendation, we should add in the end with "Thank You, [this great person]" or something like that.

Some ruminations:

I actually think that one of Bran's biggest contributions as TWP artist is to push for the best possible art that people can generate. When you have a pool of talented people, it's not too difficult to come up with something decent. But Bran wanted to see and pushed to bring out the best in each contributor so that we'd do something memorable. Not perfect, but memorable, or at least something that you know you can say was damn good. Modeling and driving for excellence is what makes things memorable. Examples that come to mind: Three Perfections (and other Discord festivals), West Pacifican over the last year.

This will need more filling out, but I think it's extremely important to acknowledge Bran's role in demanding and maintaining a standard of high ethical conduct to make the game safe for a wide range of players. There's at least one statement on this forum, plus Bran's "Dad" TG during Pride. Then there's loyalty to the region's history and culture and how that motivated his priorities and style with encouraging newer players.

As for TITW, I'd especially emphasize that he always made sure that the flow of TITW was less about having things to do and more about how offering things to do generates/cultivates character, awareness, a sense of what is right and good and meaningful. There's an intentionality here too that makes our approach to driving activity different. Other regions do fun things. I don't think many offer the depth that we do to social concerns and realities.

More can be said, but perhaps this will prompt/trigger memories of the many things that Bran has done for the region or spur some digging on the forum, RMB, Discord, etc.

This Commendation is a no-brainer.

Bran tirelessly shared his huge talents with TWP throughout his tenure as Internal Affairs Minister and continued to do so throughout his Delegacy.

Time, talent, heart ... I can't think of anyone who has contributed more to the region.

From sensible reforms streamlining Regional governance, hardworking efforts to ensure that TWP culture is the envy of all, to utilising the influence gained as Delegate to secure the Region. No effort has seemed too large or too small for Bran to not only contribute to, but to take the lead in.

Empowering older and newer players alike, clearly seen by the activity of the Guardians as one example. Bran ensured that TWP has thrived as the safest and most welcoming feeder for new players to learn the mechanics and history of NS, while keeping the richness and intelligence that sustains players who have played for over a decade.

If the TWP community is a garden, then Bran has pruned us so we grow properly, fertilised us to make us stronger, removed the weeds that inevitably crop up and even danced so that it rains for us. From the care of a green-thumbed Sasquatch, TWP stands healthy and strong.

Apologies for posting one week after this started, but I feel like commenting on this thread is a must for me since Bran has done so many things for the region and also helped me to get involved here. Some things below may already have been discussed before in the comments above, but for the sake of organization I will list everything I can remember of:

  • Three times Guardian (2018-2018, 2019 and 2020-2021 per Bran's signature), beyond the usual task of keeping the region safe, some additional points can be added:
      a) stayed as Guardian after resigning WA on his main nation and used the remaining influence to eject a few nations, saving influence for other Guardians;
      b) broke several endo-related records such as most endos (975 at May 6, 2020) and highest yield rate (82,1% at August 26, 2020) - source: Index of Delegates;

  • Cultural Renaissance (note that 1. many events here wouldn't be possible without other people but Bran played a big role to make them happen, 2. a list is not enough and the importance of these events to the region should be explained in the text of the commendation, 3. I may have missed some events):
      a) as Minister of Internal/Cultural Affairs during Halo's term: creation of the new roleplay map, first edition of the Three Perfections event, first edition of the Casserole of Humanity, first (?) edition of the Prom with Osiris;
      b) as Delegate: first Turkey Pardon, OWL-20 with Osiris and Lazarus, second edition of the Three Perfections event, second (?) Prom with Osiris, revamp of the West Pacifican and eventual name change to the Western Post, second edition of the Casserole of Humanity, transition from MoCA to Cultural Trust;

  • Other important happenings during his term as Delegate in which he played an important role:
       a) creation of the University of the West Pacific and Bran's role in UTWP mentor new players;
       b) early-2020 Hall of Nations changes: Deputies elected instead of Ministries and given more duties; creation of Regional Commendations to be spearheaded by the Speaker;
       c) Regional Guide position (inspired by CommRangers): Guides welcome new players, occasionally post Today in the West, plan some cultural activities;
       d) treaties with the NPO and Karma;

  • Commendable personal traits:
       a) use of his awesome art and design capabilities countless times for TWP (examples: TWPirate theme update, WFE designs, challenge coins, festival designs, etc);
       b) mentoring of new players through Regional Guides, UTWP and other means in order to teach them TWP culture and train future leaders;
       c) greater focus on culture rather than just gameplay during his delegacy;

I acknowledge this list may not be complete and surely some of our older residents who were here the past few years can help in listing even more accomplishments or correct a mistake I may have made, but maybe the list can be used as a starting point for the proper commendation text.

As delegate, I am waiving the 5 day limitation on discussion to allow this to continue.  I want this done with as much as possible.

The first draft is posted!

Interesting first draft. One small error is that the proposal lists Bran as the 46th Delegate of the West, but actually he was 49th.

My main concern are the long sentences listing several different things in quick succession, I'd rather use lists to separate the items in order to give the proposal a better flow, also expanding on details when needed.

I'd like to note the following:

"Prom with Osiris" should actually be "West Osi High School Prom".

TWPirates wasn't redesigned but certainly he ordered re-adoption and then normalized and promoted quorum raiding. Which is one of the best ideas ever.

I'd also like to note his contributions as Executive Producer of Dali's Drag Race.

I originally had a mix of lists and paragraphs, but got rid of the lists to maintain consistent formatting in all clauses. I'm open to changing it though.

I like the draft, I have a couple tidbits of feedback:

On 1/5/2021 at 8:47 AM, ALON said:

Grateful for Bran Astor’s dedication to The West Pacific,

"Grateful" doesn't quite fit as a preambular clause, something like "Appreciating" or "Fully aware of" fits better.

On 1/5/2021 at 8:47 AM, ALON said:

Same issue here, "Awed" could be replaced by something like "Venerating" or some other verb in present tense that would be a better fit.

Again, "Welcoming" or "Noting with amazement" are substitutes that come to mind.

On 1/5/2021 at 8:47 AM, ALON said:

This could read clearer by removing "in" or as "a program in which future leaders are developed with players being taught ..."

... and the inclusion of Haikuesday and Thank You Thursday in Today in the West,

I think this could receive a little more emphasis by outlining how these newer traditions continue to be a large feature of TWP culture.

Other than that I think this captures a lot, I haven't been around long enough to know if anything is missing, but this is shaping up to be really solid.

Good catch with the tenses. I will work on trying to get them all to match.

Removed the word "in." I believe it slipped by me when I checked for errors. I want to say I started to write "in which..." and then changed my mind.

Adding emphasis is a little harder, as Thank You Thursday isn't nearly as popular as Haikuesday, but I will work your suggestion.

Thank you!

Isn't that a strange thing? We'd rather repeat the word "no" seventeens times and call it poetry than write a simple statement of gratitude or appreciation.

I appreciate the effort my community is putting into this project. Thank you.
