Ship Sinks Near Karmelstad Harbor

On Wednesday, February 19, 1420, 7:02 PM Andolian Meridian Time a cargo ship about to make a stop at Karmelstad Harbor collided with a rock submerged during the high tide. The ship, MV Shining Glory, was from Ilirovia, and was headed for Einherfell but made a stop in Karmelstad for refueling after a trip to Andolia. The captain, 49 year old Nikols Hirsted was alerted a few times about a submerged rock island but allegedly ignored these and told his men to "continue working for there is no sense of alarm", a crew member said. It hit the starboard side of the ship, and dislodged most of the metal on the 30 year old ship. The captain went at full speed despite this, causing more metal to dislodge and open the ship's compartments. Only after water began seeping through the rooms of crew members did the captain stop the ship. An SOS signal was sent out 7:35 PM. The harbor lost contact a few minutes later. It was later revealed that the captain had cut off radio, saying that the man on the line was "too unreliable". The ship leaned to the starboard side, causing major panic on the ship. By 7:45 PM, no emergency rescue team or authority was on the scene. Help finally arrived around 7:53 PM, when a police ship rescued all 52 crew. The captain was arrested for not abiding by the Seafaring Act of 1409. He was forced to pay a NK7,000 in damages against the crew. As of today, the ship's port side is still visible.

March News-15 March

Union Workers Strike in Sytvalle Metro

By Johann Dierk-Stadvar

About 50,000 factory workers and service workers went on strike 8th of March, after weeks of delayed pay and years of harsh working conditions. Emerik Jons, the spokesperson of the Southern Workers Union, said at an interview 12th of March, "Our demands have not been met for years. Less harsh conditions for us working at the factories, less delays in salaries, and a crackdown on favoritism in the offices. As more and more businessmen begin catering more to the international market, and the slow transition to other manufacturing-capable nations outside our county such as, say, Einherfell or some other big rich nation. And as our industry shrinks, and theirs rises, our businessmen tend to the needs of their workers outside Novasamita and practically just leave us sitting in the dust." As of 12:00 PM today, an additional 20,000 workers have joined, and 826 factories, offices and businesses have closed due to the strikes. One of these closed factories is the Brunt-Hesse factory, the nation's leading car brand. If this goes on, it is estimated that around NK806,000,000 will be lost in revenue for the economy.

Wildfires Reported Near Mittelbache, State of Emergency Declared

Evacuation is underway in suburbs of the Central Novasamitan capital of Mittelbache as a massive wildfire rages 2 kilometers away at a nearby forest. The National Fire Service released a statement on Wednesday saying that one of the causes of the fire gaining speed was the summer temperature heating up the region's forests, and the lack of equipment needed to battle the flames. Fire Chief Erik Eimser said on Thursday, "The lack of equipment has caused mass panic across the fire district, as we have limited supply, and there aren't any major surface water or ground water sources to collect from, so we're really in a difficult situation right now. As of this article, over 395 sq. km. of forest area have been destroyed, and all schools in the Mittelbache-Sankt Pieter district have been closed.

Novasamita to Join Initiative on Passport Regulations

After several notorious criminals managed to flee Novasamita by faking their identities and passports, Novasamita, in order to crack down on cross-border crime, has joined an international initiative for common regulations and standards on passports and visa applications. "With this program, we should be able to stop fugitives from escaping the country and evading criminal trial and punishment," said Kelle Van Arhus, Minister of the Bureau of Jails and Confinement. "We should be able to help slow the crime rate of our nearby nations by a long shot." A bill has been passed currently at both Assemblies, and now needs the approval of the Prime Minister.
